gas spring/lift support for back hatch

I have an 86 GXL (w/ rear wiper).

I can't seem to find anyone who carries a replacement gas sping or "lift support" for my car. No lucK at Autozone or Pep Boys. The have the part for a 1st gen but it's not the same.

Anyone know who carries them?

Are my only choices Mazda, and the junkyard?

Thanks.

Unfortunately (from mazdatrix):

Note: We do not list the 86-92 Hatch Shocks. We have received very few calls for them so far, and there are MANY different ones listed by the factory - and none are cheap. When we checked into them there are: Left - with wiper, w/o wiper, + other, Right - with & w/o wiper, with & w/o cargo light, etc. etc.

I was a good idea though.

Your CAI sounds interesting....

I agree that Mazda dealer cost is high particularly if you have the rear wiper like I do. Picked up two of 'em at a junk yard for $3.00 each.

Anybody have a lead here?

Another post says they are about $250 from Mazda. I'm not paying that much.

I suppose I could look at a junkyard, but this doesn't seem like something that makes sense to get used.

Has anyone bought a similar part for a different car and reworked it to fit?

Are the stock springs completely unfixable? It seems like there must be SOME way to fix them.

Could it be possible to drill a hole in the side, thread it, install a valve core and then rig up a way to fill it?
