gas octane

Just purchased an 88 RX-7 and was wondering if I can put regular 87 octane fuel in the car? The previous owner always put premium gas in the car, but with the way gas prices are looking as was wondering if I could get away with a lower octane. Any damage in doing this? What do other people use in your RX-7's?
