You guys are going to hate me.
When I got my reman from mazda new, I drove and shifted around 3200rpm. It got me around 600km on a full tank.

Then after breakin, I shifted around 5000rpm and got around 500km/tank

Then some how I got 400km/tank out of no reason...I was really confused about it.

Turns out I am running rich at high rpm.
Added engine grounds and a straight pipe instead of the cat and got 600 km back with light driving (shifted at 3500).
450km if I reved out (8k shifts) the car all the time.

Not too shabby......

Because the laws of thermodynamics say so! If you successfully burn X amount of fuel, you get X amount of energy. Simple. And I didn't say the same amount of fuel, I said not much more. The rotary's combustion chamber shape is not as good as a piston engine's for complete combustion. Some fuel isn't burnt, so to get the same power, you'd need a bit more fuel. This is why Mazda fits all those emissions controls. If you compare the RX-7's mileage to similar age cars making similar power, you'll see it wasn't that far behind.
my safc isnt hellified rich, i lowered the fuel but didint change the sig
Glad to hear so sorted it out, I bet you found a bit more power and now use less gas.
i was always under the impression that the nature of the rotary is to be a gas guzzler, even mazda knew that!
Um, what manufacturer in there right mind would design an engine to suck heaps of gas? The naure of the rotary is to be a compact, powerful engine, not a gas guzzler. That's just a silly thing to say.

not heaps just more than other engines. Mazda would be that manufacturer simply cause of their passion for the rotary engine. no other car company wanted the rotary cause it wasnt efficient but Mazda pushed on! THANK YOU MAZDA!!!!!!they knew with r&d they would make a better engine. now we have the Renisis.

so you can say in the early days of the rotary they did design a gas guzzler but of course knowing they would get it to be an efficient engine.

oh yeah, my car is running better since i leaned it out a bit in the mid range. THANK YOU APEXI!!!! the safc is one cool little computer. your right i dont know squat about tuning as far as fuel, this is my 1st turbo sports car but im learning........nzconvertible what mods you have on your car? are you running a safc? and thanks for bringing it to my attention that i should lean my safc out i fixed my sig. too!

I get about 12-15MPG depending on where and how I am driving. I have a brand new o2 sensor but I believe it may not be grounded (mysterious unhooked ground wire in the area). I plan on tuning up the whole car soon to try to improve the gas milage. 12MPG is just a kick in the nuts for a poor college student.

5 mpg on my completely fucked up motor. Rotor housings are warped, coolant seals are almost gone, 166K on everything in it. yay. I guess these motors really don't like to be old!
