Gas Light Always On?

I just bought an 89 T2, the gas light won't go off. Could it just be a bad sensor or is it maybe something else?

Mine did that to after I replaced the fuel pump...... could never figure it out.. checked all the wiring, grounding, ect.. fuel level gauge worked just fine.. but the damn idiot light would never go off!!!

Hopefully someone else knows cause I ended up ditching the light all together when i moved the idiot lights below the stereo!!!!

The FUEL light works off a thermistor in the fuel tank. If the light is on all the time the thermistor is kaput OR you have a dead short on the White/Red wire at the fuel pump connector. It's most likely the fuel pump tank unit. NOT the pump but the tank unit as in fuel level float/thermistor. Get one from the wrecking yard or buy one from Mazdatrix or the dealer.

If the FUEL light does not come on, you remove the fuel pump plug. Then you put a ground on the White/Red wire on the harness side of the plug and with the key to ON, the light should light up.

Before doing that you should determine if the bulb is any good. Just turn the key to ON with the motor not running and the light should come on. If it does not, then the problem is with the bulb/idiot light cluster/or if most idiot lights do not come on, then possibly a alternator relay in the CPU (or bad alternator itself) if it's a series four car. Series five? who cares.

Bad grounds for the LOW GAS sensors is not one of the more common problems.

So would replacing this require me to drop the fuel tank? Is fixing this necessary? I don't know if I want to deal with that right now.
