gas light= check engine light
my check engine light came on the other day when i was on E... then when i got as it went away but today again i went on E and lower then before and it didnt come on.. and not to mention i dont even have a gas light.... so what im asking is that..... is the check engine light the gas light on an s5 (i have a 90 vert auto) or do i have something that is going out please help.... thanks guys

Did you check for codes yet? The check engine light does not come on for low gas, that's what the low gas light is for, but it probably doesn't work. It doesn't work on my '91 either. So check for codes!
... you let your FC get below 1/8th of a tank, and honestly expect to still make it somewhere? I think some days I burn that much gas just getting out of the driveway...
erm, wait, that was the 1/2 hour of trying to get it out of my parking lot in a blizzard. Never mind.
If you really were sucking fumes, the ECU could have detected some odd operation from an air bubble in the line or something. I don't know if the S5 ECU detects misfires or such things, but an air bubble would certainly make an engine misfire for a bit.

The tank has to be damn near dry for the light to come on, and that is when the bulb is working. If your light comes on and you can't see a gas station, you best have a jerry can and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
