No. Check for codes. It's easy.

Did you check for codes yet? The check engine light does not come on for low gas, that's what the low gas light is for, but it probably doesn't work. It doesn't work on my '91 either. So check for codes!

So no codes yet your check engine light came on. Alos, you DON'T at all have a gas light? Maybe the bulb burnt out. All FC's have the gas light on the idiot cluster.

... you let your FC get below 1/8th of a tank, and honestly expect to still make it somewhere? I think some days I burn that much gas just getting out of the driveway...

erm, wait, that was the 1/2 hour of trying to get it out of my parking lot in a blizzard. Never mind.

If you really were sucking fumes, the ECU could have detected some odd operation from an air bubble in the line or something. I don't know if the S5 ECU detects misfires or such things, but an air bubble would certainly make an engine misfire for a bit.

The tank has to be damn near dry for the light to come on, and that is when the bulb is working. If your light comes on and you can't see a gas station, you best have a jerry can and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
