Gas guage doesn't work..

i barely bought a 86 7..don't know which model..but just got it..gas gauge don't work unless you fill it all the way up and it'll show that it's full...but when it comes down to 3/4 of it still left...it'll go down all the way to E...stay there until i fill it up again to full...was wondering if anyone has any opinions or anyway to fix this before i go to the dealership or something...

(TIA)..

The sender unit in the gas tank is probably bad. Buy one out of the wrecking yard (with the pump also, since your there) or buy one from Mazdatrix.com. The problem is not the gauge or the wiring.

I had the same problem and readings. I pulled the fuel pump assembly from the hatch area. Took it to Mazda and showed them the OE number off the float assembly. It cost $40. The rheostat spring on my old one broke, so it could only read on a fuller tank. I took time to inspect the screen and remove debris from the tank with a Kerosene hand pump.

That was about 5 years ago.
