Depends on the hills.

I used to let the light come on with my 87 GXL all the time when I first got it unti one day I had begun to go up a rather steep hill a few minutes after it came on and the car died. I had to roll down the hill, restart the car, then fill it up.

Otherwise I usually was able to do another 30 miles when it popped on and even then it took ~14 gallons to fill the tank back up so I still had two gallons in reserve.

If you have a TII I wouldn't recommend letting it go below 1/4 of a tank for fear of fuel starvation in an agressive driving situation or something similiar to what happened with me. You might pop the motor.

usually about 3 gallons when the light starts coming on, but as uRizen says, you want to avoid letting the gas light come on at all. If you do run it dry; you can damage the pump and the engine (as well as suck in all crap that sits on the bottom of the tank if you have not drained and cleaned the tank in a long time).

Yeah, I ran mine dry once and the light never even came on. I generally fill up at a little below 1/4 tank to avoid the crap at the bottom of the tank.

It also depends on your gas mileage. If you're getting 8 miles to the gallon, not very far. 20 miles to the gallon, a bit better.

I just fill my car up when it gets about 1/3 of the way down, usually at 1/2 (easier for my premix). Better safe than sorry .
