i went and test drove an 86 gxl the other day... and while diving at about 60 mph i had to constantly make little adjustements in steering to keep it going straight. It felt like if i needed to make a highway lane change quickly the rear end would come around on me. Could that just be blown out electronically controlled suspension? cause somebody told me it was some sort of steering system that mazda put in there that did that on purpose...

PS. which year gen 2. has the taillights that light up as two little round circles on both sides?

can't help you too much on the steering, but it could just be that the car needs an alignment..

and with the round tail lights...all the 89-91 models have them...with a few exceptions on the tail light swap on the 86-88

 

My car handled like that when I bought it. I replaced springs and shocks (totally shot) and the problem went away. Since then I have installed PU bushings, new ball joints, new steering rack and tie rod ends. Car drives like new.

Oh....forgot to mention one thing. Loose wheel bearings. I cleaned and packed mine and then adjusted them per the FSM. That made a difference too.

PS. My car has 240K miles....your problems probably are not as wide spread as mine.
