Fun with coil packs? Input please...

I drive my TII everyday, it does fine. Yesterday was no exception.... I was out and about around town, stopping and starting the car regularly (fuel-cut switch = yay), no problems with it at all as per usual.

Then, all of a sudden, the last time I cranked it up it started just fine. Backed out of my parking space, pulled into the street, was heading for the light and all of a sudden the car cuts off. I try to crank it back up and it refused. Just spinning.

The slope of the road managed to let me roll it to the curb and stop, where I tried again to get the car to turn over. No luck. It'd sit there and spin forever, but nothing would happen. Tried playing with the fuel switch a bit, no difference. Sounded the same either way. Sounded like it wasn't getting spark.

Ended up having to tow the thing home. Later that night, I played around with it for a while just doing a little troubleshooting. I went ahead and yanked the plugs and fuel fuses and let it see if it wanted to spit anything out....it didn't. Plugs were all kinds of nasty though, so I cleaned them up, put them back in, double-checked my plug wire connections to the coils, etc. Still nothing.

I also checked my fuses both up top and under the dash....everything checked out fine there, too.

So, I dunno. I'm guessing I blew a coil pack one way or the other. I"m just stumped as this was quite sudden. Is there an effective way I can test them myself? Don't know if it'd be the leading or trailing coil that went. I didn't mess with them too much last night as far as trying to arc anything as it was nearly midnight and my light source sucked.

Whatcha think?

You'd have to blow both (all 3) coils to totally die like that, and that's not likely. And if you pulled the EGI fuse to kill the injectors, that one also kills the ignitors...

Check for your 5v reference from the ECU to the sensors, TPS would be a good place to check for it- brown/white wire to ground...

I'd grab a meter and recheck the voltage at the fuel pump.
Something in the fuel cut wiring may have come loose.

Also check to see if the main relay is "clicking" on when the key is turned (all this crap pops in my head AFTER I hit the "post" button, lol)

Man, it could be lots of things- ignition switch, CAS took a dump on ya (got any codes?), rotor housing ground broke, AFM plug fell off, large vac hose came off, etc etc etc....

This might be more than obvious but check for codes. Just in case ya know.

Then just run down all the things that control spark. CAS, coils, main relayl etc.

No codes....sounds fine, just like it's not getting any spark, which is why I'm thinking it's an ignition problem. AFM plug is fine, if that were the case the car would still start anyway, just immediately die. No vacuum leak for sure.

The motor spins freely and healthily, just won't turn all the way over.

I'll look into grabbing a volt meter.

Would it be worth trying to arc the coils?

if you want to do a quick check on spark leave the egi fuse in there or which ever one is the one that controls the ignition and hold a wire with a spark plug in it. It should show arcs while cranking. No arcs=no spark

For now, if you want to concentrate on the ignition system, check for your coil resistances (with power OFF!), should be about 1 ohm...Check for your 12v input from the main relay, black/yellow wire IIRC...Check for your .8 v timing signals from the ECU (forgot which wires those are- gonna have to crack open the FSM) on both igniters...Check your CAS coil resistances (160 ohms, plus or minus about 40)...

it would be wise to check the ignition switch. if indeed you are getting no spark and everything else checks good, crack open the switch, sometimes the contacts just wear slap out!

its happend to me a couple of times..
good luck!
