Fuel and the turbo swap
Fuel and the turbo swap
I am doing a turbo swap in my 89 gxl. I have sourced a s5 turbo engine and am getting close to putting it all together. I do not have the turbo fuel pump, so instead of buying a stock one, I figured I would go ahead and get a Nippendenso. Question is do I need to get a fuel pressure regulator right off the bat since I am getting a bigger fuel pump?
Just to answer the "Why not go stock?" question, I will be porting and eventually upgrading the turbo. I don't want to buy a pump now and another one later.

A nippondenso what? There are a lot of pumps made by denso including the stock FC pumps, the FD pump, cosmo pumps and supra pumps. In general, they all should do a good job of not overwhelming the stock FPR. Idle fuel pressure with my FD pump is only 34 psi, which is just a tiny bit over the stock specs.
Supposedly the supra pump will still be manageable with a stock FPR. Though I don't have first hand experience with it to say for sure. I think the biggest concern you should have using that pump is the fact that is pulls up to 16 amps, while the stock FC pumps only pull around 7 amps. An upgraded alternator would be nice for peace of mind.
