Fuel Tank Discussion

Today I finally got real work going on my rex. =) owned the damn thing for 3 months now its just not easy to work on a car when your 18 and your parents don't know you have it, lol.

Anyways. On less than half a tank my car chokes and stutters. I cracked the fuel tank open and hosed it out. I see there is still lots of rust sediment I need to shop vac out. I think its still in good condition. It has some kind of lining that seems to be peeling but with 68k miles on an 87 is this usual or anything to worry about? I plan on keeping it stock or maybe at most 75hp shot of nitrous, Do these fuel pumps die and should I replace it while I'm in there? If I want to do I have to replace the wiring too?

Fuel filter, thats another thing getting checked out to figure out the choking, its probably the cause, i did the fuel pump pull for fun, lol. Do they make aftermarket filters I should consider or is it all the same?

Fuel Lines, I've heard of people running SS lines for fuel, where do you buy these and whats the advantage over stock?

Last question I swear, is that area around where the fuel pump drops in the tank the "baffles" that rust out? Also where if I have one is the "surge tank" i hear about?

Try replacing the filter on the bottom of the pump. You can get them at the dealer for around $20

I have a 88 that would cut out when turning left and that seemed to fix it

Do NOT vacuum a gas tank. Seriously, this is a bad idea...Most vacuums these days seal the motor from the impeller, but it's still a stupid thing to do.

Are you missing the baffle around the sump? If it's loose, then the engine will starve in cornering.

Meh, just use the Mazda filter.

You can buy stainless line and AN fittings at most performance shops. These lines are more rugged, easier to connect and disconnect, and much more visually appealing. Be ready to spend $1500 or more to do the car front to back.

I already filled the tank with alot of water after i drained the tank of its gas so i think its pretty much water with a little gasoline, and its not my shop vac lol.

He isn't talking about ruining a perfeclty good vacuum, but rather the fact that when the gas fumes reach the electric motor it will ignite the fumes and blow you the car and the vacuum up like a bomb... regardless of how much gas is left in the tank, it is never a good idea to introduce spark to gas fumes.

You should use rags and paper towels to wipe the left over dirt and water up

That's even worse.

If you want to know how bad, visit a welding shop that repairs fuel tanks (if you can find one!). All the workers only have 6 fingers for a reason...

LOL you guys are hilarious. I did it anyways, the tank sat open overnight so it must have air'd out. I'm still alive, no harm done, I think i'm dropping the fuel tank anyways for a good hardcore cleaning. Do I need to upgrade fuel pump wiring if I put an edelbrock fuel pump in that draws 9-13 amps?

Use a stock pump replacement. That Edelbrock is going to raise fuel pressure a lot, which will make the car run very rich. Or, upgrade the fuel pressure regulator at the same time.
