Fuel system problems?
Hi,
Let me start by saying that I am a noobie, but am trying to educate myself on my car and I realized some get frustrated with trivial questions!
I have a question with the fuel pump control. My Haynes maintenance manual states that when I jumper the fuel pump via yellow connector that I should hear a whirring sound when the ignition is turned to "on". When I do this I do here the pump activate, but this manual also states that if the whirring sound continues for a long period of time that the fuel pump system is probably not pressurizing properly.
My question is this! What is a long period of time and what controls the assumed S/D of the pump. Of course this S/D is only assumed by myself.

Not sure what you mean by S/D.
when you jumper the Connector it will turn the pump on.(whirring).,now how long that whirring sound is depends on How long you have the connector jumped.
The Pump will Kick on when the flapper on the AFM is moved too.
.Now you say that you are having Fuel Problems.Why not go ahead and state what the problem "is"?.Maybe someone can Give it a Go for ya.

Thanks for the response. I did not want to get ahead of myself without doing some checks first but I will jump in with my problem. What I mean by S/D is shutdown. I was only going by what my service manual stated. Here is an exact quote from the manual:
1. Bridge the terminals of the yellow, two pin check connector
2. Have an assistant turn the ignition key to On while you listen at the fuel tank. You should hear a whirring sound for a few seconds.
1) If there is no whirring sound, there is a problem in the fuel pump circuit.
Check the EGI main fuse first.
2) If the whirring sound continues for a long period of time, the fuel system
is probably not pressurized properly. Check the fuel system pressure.
So you can see why I asked the question.
I will start by stating a few known items. Not much in the way of concrete troubleshooting yet but here is what I have experienced.
I was experiencing problems with it starting and decided to replace my battery. It started immediately after replacing it with no problems. Took it for a drive with no issues. Runs great, no hitches.
Parked my car for a few days and tried to start it again and no go! It turned over good (or so it seemed) just no fire. So I tried engaging the fuel pump prior to On for several seconds. I never at any point smelled gas. Again I am assuming I should smell gas if it is flooded, but maybe not? This I am not sure of? This is why I asked the question because the manual stated in 2) that if the pump continues to run there is a problem with pressure in my fuel system. Now I have yet to check for fuel pressure because I lack the proper test gauge at the moment and frankly the line seems to be buried! What a silly place to put a fuel filter.
I have a couple of theories based on my obsevations. Now I am by far no expert but here goes.
1) Could it be that my fuel system is evacuating when it sits for awhile. Fuel pressure regulator sticking open? I can prove once I re-check the fuel pressure after 5 minutes and see if it has dropped assuming there are no external leaks which I do not believe there to be any.
2) Possibly my alternator is not charging my system correctly and thus does not have the juice to give spark? This I can also check when I get it going.
Anyways if there is anyone who can confirm I might be headed in the right direction or lead me in the right direction that would be great.
