Fuel pump questions....

So i just got through taking my fuel pump out. I hook it up directly to the battery and it fires up nice and then suddenly quits puffing still running but no puffing out the hole. Is this a sign of a bad fuel pump??? Or is it supposed to so this??

you aren't supposed to run them dry, it can ruin pumps. and what do you mean by 'puffing'?

its like it puffs..puff...pufff.....pufff...puffff like a rotor without the spark plugs in. in rapid succesion. Then it quits and barely blows until starting the puffing again.

wait, why are you doing this? if you had a dead fuel pump the car wouldn't run. if you had a weak one it would probably lean out.
