Sounds like you may have a bad circuit opening relay. Inside the relay are two seperate coils, one energized when the key is turned to start, the other when the AFM door is opened (during & after start). If the former was bad, you'd get no pump trying to start, yet get it when the check connector is jumpered (simulating the AFM door switch being met).

The relay is down under the steering column, yellow in color when viewed from below (S4 cars)...

i think i did something stupid. i was looking around with a test light... i thought it might be the clutch switch and i got a spark from one of the green wires. my volt meter was all the way down which i thought was odd so i got my battery charger to check it out. my battery was good and my car actually started but now my gauge cluster is dead. all fuses are fine what did i fry?

METER FUSE In the interior fuse box.

An engine will start with the wire to the coil for the START circuit is removed from the circuit opening relay. I run one car like this delibertly like that. It is the switch in the afm that will overcome this disability. When the engine rotates it WILL pull the flap aft and make the switch.

I don't recommend disabling this coil in the circuit opening relay, I just did it to show that there will normally be no starting problem with it disabled.

thanks guys and you're right it was the meter fuse... swear i thought i checked it.

all's fine and good now but my starting problem seems to only happen when it's cold outside. now that it's warm out she starts every time. anything i should look into changing?

I believe it, and it doesn't surprise me that you've actually tried this
