fuel injector cleaner/ revving

i read somewhere on here that when you put injector cleaner in your car you can hold it at read line for 1 minute to really clean out the system is that ok, or should i just drive it like normal? also im planning to run injector cleaner on 3 consecutive tanks to make sure the fuel system gets fully cleaned out ( sat for years and no one ever did crap to it, so its prolly gunked up good.

Well... assuming a stock ECU, the secondary injectors don't fire until 3800 RPM or so. If you just drive around normally, they won't spend much time firing, and they won't get cleaned.

Also, even a minute at redline won't do much for badly clogged injectors.

What you really want to do is take them out, send them into be professionally reverse flow ultrasonic cleaned, and put them back in.

Check the Fuel pump's pickup. That tends to catch the brunt end of the gunk-fest; as it's supposed to. Pickup strainer, fuel lines, fuel filter, and then injectors. It doesn't hurt to check the tank, itself, too, while the sender's out. You could run fifteen tanks of injector cleaner, and it won't do a damned bit of good if there's sediment in the tank.

Also, speaking of injectors: How much do the stock 460s usually run? I had a guy at my local "Advanced Discount A/P" try and tell me that these babys were somewhere in the neighborhood of $118!!!!

WHAT!?

I was going to replace all 4 (2 primary + 2 seconmdary on 86 GXL, Ja?) and about kicked over from that tag.

The secondary injectors don't open automatically at 3800 RPM. You need some load on the engine, so revving in neutral won't do it.

Injector cleaner basically sucks. The only way to clean the injectors is to remove them and have them professionally (usually ultrasonic) cleaned.

You could remove the pressue sensors vacuum line and plug it. Then each and everytime you were over 3500 the secondarys WILL come on. It's in the fsm.

How do you know if your injectors need cleaning?

Cost is generally around $20 per injector.

As far as cleaning the injectors by free revving, it just doesn't work that well. You would have to hold the engine above 3800 RPM for an entire tank of gas to clean the secondaries. Of course, "pour in tank" cleaners don't work anyway, so it's all a moot point.
