has this happened to anyone else? and is there a way to fix it?

Try this.
lift the hatch carpet up and it will allow you to see a Silver plate that is screwed to the Floor. That plate is the access door for your Gas tank sending unit/etc.You can literally Pull the Pump and Sender out of the tank.
What I would like you to try is to Just TAP on top Part that is held on with the Six Screws to the tank.Just to see if the Float is stuck.IF it is,then your Gauge will return to normal.
If not,you can take the Sender and pump out and see what is going on,.(by removing those Six screws)
You may also have a bad ground wire off that could hinder the sender from getting signal to the Gauge.

How 'bout following the procedure in the Body Electrical section of the FSM??? Simple check out to determine if it's the pot on the fuel tank unit or the gauge/circuit.

ok nvm on deleting this thread... the gauge only works from halve a tank up. when below that it moves a lot. and eventually drops to below empty.. but i got it figured i get 200 miles to the tank.. and thats me driving in the mountains.. what does everyone else get per tank? and could the problem with my gauge be the sending unit?

I can get a little over 200 miles on a full tank. Strange i thought it would be more. (S4 n/a also) You should remove your fuel pump and check the linkage/sending unit to see if its sticking or have poor connections. BEWARE the 6? screws that hold the fuel pump to the tank are very easy to strip or F-up.

Civerus..
well u can get 310 out of it because i live in a flat area. im constantly going up and down mountain passes. so its normal. now if i were to drive say sacramento id get much better all freeway and flat.

Apart from driving style differences, Civerus also has a larger fuel tank because he has an S5 (18.5 gallons vs. 16.6 for Zer0Suvivers with his S4 car).

The sending unit is bad then. Mine did the same after 1/2 tank was gone. When I pulled it off I noticed the "coil" was ripped apart halfway down. You'll know what I mean if you ever take it off.

Poke around the for sale section. Many people sell the fuel pumps, but never have a buyer for the rest of the assembly. It's all attached to the tank plate. I bought mine cheap because it was just some left over to someone.

I just got a Pristine tank and it came with the Pump and sender unit.
SHIPPED for 80 bucks Canadian...and the week before I got a good tank Given to me in exchange for "rotary Knowledge",(the guy had no clue what he was doing.).
So there is people willing to ship Gas tanks, and ifthey don't ship the whole thing you can get the sender..Good luck man.
(btw,my car travelled 100 miles and didn't burn a drop of gas!..it was towed!)

Mine had similar problems. A new fuel sending unit did the trick.
