Fuel gauge whacked but low fuel warning light ok
And thank god that that warning light is ok. Mix highway and city driving and you can forget about using your trip meter to measure mileage.
Anyway. my fuel gauge is not reporting properly. When I fill up, the gauge goes up to about 3/4. As I drive it drops too quickly and sits at empty until the next fill up. The warning light has been working perfectly, though.
The console that the gauge is in is out of my crashed GXL and was working perfectly before. Also, I've had that entire circuit board checked and it's 100%. So where should I go looking to solve this problem?
Also on an electrical note, when I put the car in reverse I get a 1 to 2 volt *drop*. Dashboard lights dim and everything. What the hell is causing this and how do I fix it?
Thanx much!

http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-pump.htm The fuel low lite is controled by a thermistor in the tank. Its a seperate signal from the variable resistor that sends a signal to the needle on the gauge. If you take your fuel pump out of the tank, you'll see a thick black piece of non electrical wire running along side the fuel pump. It will have a electrical wire winding down it to the bottom, where the electrical wire enters a one inch long cylinder. That cylinder contains a thermistor. When the thermistor becomes uncovered, it sends a ground signal for the lite to turn on. Go to this site for information on thermistors http://www.howstuffworks.com/therm3.htm This site http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...stem_part1.pdf in chapter 15, METERS, will show you how to tell if you sending unit and gauge are worth a flip. Or, just patch in the fuel pump from your buddys car and prove it is'nt worth a flip. Conclusion: Your sending unit in the tank is'nt worth a flip. (humor)
