Fuel gauge questions/help

Hey gang. My 86 SE's fuel gauge is off, like it needs to be ajusted. I fill my tank till it clicks off but don't get more then 12 gallons in. And insted of the gauge being over full it stops at quarter to full. As I drive I've let it get to "E" and the fuel light comes on. As said ealier, when I refuel I don't get more then 12 gallons in till the gas nozzel clicks off.

Whats the remedy? Replacing the gauge cluster? Fuel gauge alone? Something that measures the gas in the tank lol?

All helps appreciated.

That actually sounds normal to me.
My gas light flickers at around 12 to 13 gallons.
It goes solid on at around 13 to 14 gallons.
I think the MAX capacity of the fuel tank is 16.6 gallons.
Once you start to get under the last two gallons, there's a chance the engine will not run!
It's also not a good idea to run it down that low, since all that crap that accumulates in the gas tank get concentrated at the very bottom and starts to get sucked into the fuel pump when you drain it that low.

Remedies?

Yeah but why wouldn't it get over 3/4th tank all of a sudden? It used to go over the "F" when full.

It's NOT the gauge. It's the POT attached to the tank unit that has WORN OUT. Get another tank unit.

If you think it IS the gauge (it ain't the gauge), then open the FSM and check it out per the FSM.

I recently posted pictures of the tank unit. They're out there somewhere on this forum.

No, not a new tank, but a fuel level sending unit.
