are fram fuel filters just as good as Mazda's?

Fram is terrible.

Go Mazda if you can't afford a really nice filter set-up, like, say...
100 micron stainless steel screen before the pump, and 10 micron paper screen afetr the pump, with a total pressure loss of .30 psi.
Aeromotive fuel systems rock! But at $80 per each filter....
