I would hand my car over to them any day if there was a serious problem I don't know how to fix.

I mean, they have the special tools and knowledge as well as experience, so why not trust them? Maybe I am just blessed for actually knowing two Mazda techs that have been Mazda techs for like thirty years and no other dealer out there has this kind of experience working for them....I understand you all are giving very good advice and information, but you shouldn't tell people not to do things if you have had a bad experience in the past. Good help for our cars is out there working at Mazda dealerships, but you just have to ask around to find the right people if you can't do it yourself.
Because of bad bad experiences with 99% of the Mazda dealers I have ever seen.

For example back in 89 my 87 Sport had a reverse light switch go out. Pretty common thing. At the time I was working in the automotive electronics industry, so I checked the car out and figured what the problem was.

So since the car was under warrenty still I took the car into the largest Mazda dealer in San Diego county. This is the one in the central part of San Diego and had service awards and recommendations everywhere for the abilities of mechanics and was the first dealer in San Diego to even get an RX-7.

So I take the car in and tell the service advisor what the problem is (bad/gummed up reverse light switch), he says okay and takes the car in.

2 and half hours later, (I was waiting) he comes in and tells me I need a new battery and that is what the problem is. Mind you it took him two and half hours to figure this out!!!!

Now mind you I was installing award winning car stereos and had just been nominated for one of the top 100 installers in the country at the time. I said," pardon me, a dead battery, lets go look".

So we go out to the car in the service bay, the mechanic has the hood open, but the funny thing was that my stereo was on full blast ( a 750 watt, 5 dedicated amplifers system that could hit 138-140db easy- no small trick back in the late 80's). Of course he has the shop battery charger hooked up, because he pretty much smoke the battery earlier.

So I tell him to show me, (after the service manager turns down the radio quickly) and he turns off the battery charger, puts the car in reverse. Well of course the reverse lights do not come on. The battery is dead. He turns the battery charger on (it hits 16volts on its indicator) and then the reverse light switch works. I start the car, un-plug the battery charger- car is running put the clutch in, put the car in reverse... light does not work.

So I tell him that he simply is running some much voltage at 16 volts that the switch is arcing closed. He shakes his head, no and tells me it is just because the battery (that was brand new 3 months before) and then the service advisor tells me this tech has the most experience with a Mazda rotary than any other mechanic.

So this clueless tech then goes on about how a 12 volt battery is gonna solve the problem (even though a running car at 14.4 volts didn't).

I get fed up and tell them to put the car back together and I would take it. That I didn't trust a mechanic that couldn't even put a meter on the switch and test it.

So they put the car together and I take... fumming angry...half way home I notice a buldge in the hood just above a shock tower... the best Mazda mechanic that the best Mazda dealer in Sand Diego has left a socket wrench under hood on the shock tower.

The story goes on and on about how they fucked up the hood repaint and all the problems after that with this dealer, but I won't bore you here with it.

And that is just one example of the fucked up Mazda dealer mechanics. Can you imagine these idiots dealing with a FD or RX-8--- hell I shudder just thinking about it.

i work at a dealership and i will attest that no single mechanic knows everything, also, not many people know much if anything about rotaries. this is the main reason it is hard to find rebuilders for these engines though i had my T2 engine out and torn down completely by hand (no air tools with the exception of removing the front and rear eccentric shaft bolts) in less than 3 hours and moving at a moderate pace, this is only the second time i have removed the engine but we all learn from mistakes and i found warped end housings slightly beyond spec so it wasn't sealing properly.

you will find good and bad techs at every shop and dealer, it is just luck of the draw or word of mouth that you happen to find one that fits your needs. most of my customers are referrals from other customers but even skilled mechanics can overlook something minor but a good mechanic will admit when he is wrong and learn from his mistakes.
