Fuel cut switch-flooding-No Start-Sputtering-etc
I recently pickup up my RX-7, and so far it has left me stranded twice...wonderful.
The previous owner suggested that I have the injectors cleaned and to comabt the problem he installed a fuel cut-off switch.
Here's what happens when I need to get somewhere and I decide to take the 7: When I previously shut off the car, I used the fuel cut-off to kill yet negating any fuel from pissing in the motor overnight. Get in the car, turn the switch on, depress the clutch and start cranking...and get nothing.
What I do notice is a smell of unburnt fuel. So I figure its flooded anyway. I turn the fuel cut-off switch to "OFF" and start cranking away. It will sputter and I get a few puffs of smoke out of the back. I take the key out and crank again until I do not get any sputtering. I'll turn the fuel cut-off switch to "ON" and all that starts is the smell of gas fumes emitting from my car.
Just 2 days ago I drove nearly 800 miles on the car (just took delivery). In the meantime, I threw in some MMO in the gas tank (8oz per fill-up) to help clean the injectors on the way home. Well, I guess that didn't work.
Other tid-bits: smokes on startup ala James Bond smoke screen including several colours of the rainbow and plumes of blue smoke billow out whenever I shifted at a high RPM (7000+). I noticed this on the way home from picking up the car. So far, I have only gotten this POS to start ONCE while it was cold outside without the assistance of a car giving me a jump-start. Today I went to drive the car to a local shop to start the unbastardizing & engine rebuild process...but the ****** wouldn't start.
Let me repeat the starting sequence I've been doing (just in case I'm wrong):
1. Cut fuel to kill car the last time I drove
2. Turn fuel cut on (meaning: power to fuel pump)
3. Depress clutch, turn key
----- no start -------
4. Turn key to "OFF" position
5. Turn fuel cut to "OFF" (meaning: no power to fuel pump)
6. Crank away
----- Car sputters a bit and stops ------
7. Turn fuel cut to "ON"
8. Crank away
---- Car sounded better when trying to start with fuel cut "OFF" -----
---- Still not starting -----
9. Hook up jumper cables to car so I don't kill battery
10. Try various combos of; pedal in/not in, cranking while fuel is cut and when it starts to sputter I'll turn it on while still cranking, and anything else I could think of sans pulling the plugs while freezing rain is falling.
I need to get this car 20 miles away for a fresh motor, a proper suspension, injectors and fix anything else that may be life-threatening. Tow trucks are out of the question: they're all morons where I am living currently and I wish them all a slow and grueling death (long story).
-I didn't, well couldn't, try push starting...there's ice everywhere. Will this work?
-I could try ether, but does anyone have experience with using it for AUTOMOTIVE purposes. (I don't need a Fear & Loathing experience in this thread)
-Am I a moron and I'm not starting the car correctly? (very possible)
-Do I need to go to Napa, buy new plugs and pray that it works?
- Old fashion exorcism?
Someone help me...

An rx-7 is not a piece of ****. Maybe you bought one if rough shape but no matter what, no dissing the 7. A bunch of different colours comin out the exhaust doesn't sound good, hope u got a fat wallet. In the mean time to deal with the flooding, the fuel cut-off switch is a good bandaid. When you hit step 6 don't let her sputter then die, when she turns over hit the switch to activate the fuel pump and give a little bit of gas.

Yea, Mills is right, try to start without pump on, then flick it on.
If its a S5 floor the gas pedal when u start it too, that will trigger a ECU fuel cut, flip the pump on and release pedal, it should start.

Like they said, on a S5, holding the pedal to the floor cuts fuel like a fuel cut switchl
If it's mainly not starting when it's cold, take look at the back of the waterpump housiing and make sure the water thermo switch is connected.
When starting, the ECU looks at rpms under 500.....water temperature and the Start signal from the starter circuit. It bypasses looking at the afm for fuel amount. Just the other three things. So, if your water thermo sensor is disconnected the ECU defaults to 176 degrees for water temp and consequently delivers fuel at a rate for a warm engine i.e. too little fuel.
It's just an outside possibility that might be your problem. OUtside possibility but worth the five minutes it takes to look.

I know a rebuild isn't going to be cheap - that's why I'm selling a Mustang Cobra. Eventhough the new 7 is a basket-case, including APC pedal covers and pimp-tastic slotted/drilled death rotors, I still think its quite an upgrade from my over-invested-in Cobra.

I applaud you, my friend.
I'm having trouble getting my TII to start right now. I know how much it blows.
Best of luck.
