A clean air filter to start.

A high mileage motor will waste fuel no matter what you do.

Some drivers run a piggyback computer (an S-AFC) to tweak the tune.

Start with a FULL tuneup. Plugs, wires, TPS adjustment, all filters, fluids, etc. etc. Check the values of both temp (coolant and air intake) sensors and make sure they match the factory specs. Have your injectors professionally cleaned.

Above all, MAKE SURE you are NOT smelling a fuel leak in the engine bay. Pay particular attention to the fuel pulsation damper. If you have a leak, FIX IT NOW.

If you are smelling RAW GAS, especially from the engine bay.... you got other problems... do a search for Pulsation Damper and check around for fuel leaks in the engine bay.

Running rich doesn't smell like raw gas... its an eye burning, nasty funk semi gass smelling noxious rx-7 fart.

you should smell my Portet TII running pre-mix.... YEEESH........I reek of exhaust if I screw around too much with the car idling in the garage!!

If you are not leaking fule in the engine bay and ARE in fact smelling your exhaust, AND if that exhuast containes no cats and high flow mufflers... there's your culprit. Just the nature of the beast.. especially i high mileage beast.

Also, N/A's with open exhaust systems tend to run rich, an SAFC is the most cost effective way to combat this (assuming that eferyting else is working correctly and its just normal RX-7 ruchnesses-- es.)
