fuel and additives question plus extras

i know that my 86fc na is built for octane 87 and that anything over that is redundant. my real question lies in adding additives to the tank. i know that as a general rule it is never a good idea to continually add engine cleaners and injector cleaners to your fuel as it does (supposedly) more damage than good in the long run. but with the rotary i was thinking maybe it is different? maybe better, or possibly worse? i am on a tight budget this month and my car is on that brink of needing a complete tuneup, belts plugs and all. in the meantime though, is it safe to use these quick fix additives? if so, what would be the best to use?

as a second note, i am starting to smell oil burning. it isnt an overwhelming smell, and there are no leaks within my seals, although there is a small exhaust leak where my cat was welded, nothing major. typically i only smelt this when i would be redlining her and she was low on oil. although lately i catch quick wiffs of the oil burning when race car starting and/or high speeds. this is another reason why im thinking if i can add some sort of additive to help appease the burn then ill do it. she is in need of a rebuild in about another 60000 kliks, as for now she has plenty of pull and great compression. i dont know what it could be.

The oil burning could be many things, you need to determine where the smell is coming from, like under the hood, or under the car, or out the back.

A small amount of additives isn't generally a problem, injector cleaner does burn hot i understand but that wouldnt be an issue as long it wasnt an excessive amount of it you were adding. I generally add a pretty liberal dose of injector cleaner to my tank maybe every 2nd or 3rd month to keep it running smooth. I havent found a need to run the stuff in every tank, if your gunking up that fast something is wrong with your fuel system.

If you are premixing 2 stroke, thats is good for the motor, bad for your cats, and other exhaust system components. You might foul out your o2 sensor more quickly too i'm not sure. Overall its more good than harm.

I would recomend the centerforce clutches if you got the cash, if your replacing the plates anways your looking at a lot of money towards that. The flywheel i would keep stock, or get something similar to stock replacement if yours is beyond repair. Generally you can just resurface the one you got. An aftermarket lightweight flywheel will make the car harder to shift smoothly in traffic, and get it rolling. So my oppinion is only replace it, if it is really worn out or something, unless your building a track car.

All additives are snake-oil except some injector cleaners. Most injector cleaners with Techron work well to help prevent deposits but won't clean off the buildup that happens over time. For that you need to have an injection shop ultrasonically clean the injectors.

Even a small exhaust leak can make a large smell. Don't worry about a little oil burning if you aren't getting smoke. Also no additive will be able to fix it.
