Front Wheel Bearings
Hey,
I took my '87TII to the local Mazda dealer for a 4-wheel alignment. They worked on it and told me they couldn't align it because there was too much wear in the front wheel bearings. No problem with that, 'specially after 190,000 miles.
What was puzzling is that the shop guy told me you can't replace the bearings, you have to put new hubs on the spindle - $1000. Yikes!
Anyway, I stopped by the local Checker store and this guy says he can get bearings - inner & outer - with seals for $50.
Anyone replaced these things? If so, how big a deal is it?
THX!

Yes, you can change the bearings but it's not easy. Mazdatrix has a write up of one way to get the bearing races out on their web site. Just look you'll find it. I changed one of mine. I took it to a local machine shop. The guy welded a couple beads on the inner race and then pressed it out. Putting the new one in isn't a problem just getting the old one out. Cost me $15 at the machine shop plus the new bearings. Much better than $500!
