front bearing
I'm in the middle of replacing my '87's front bearings at this very moment (among other things). The easiest way is found in Aaron Cake's description of his Project Tina car found on this site. I tried adding the link but it didn't work for some reason, but it's not hard to find and is very interesting reading if you own a second gen car. I was making a major issue out of this until he replied with his method which basically simplified my life.
they are press-in bearings. you need to have the hub assembly heated generously and use some man power and a hammer and something that fits the size of the bearing to press it through and go to town on it...
mazda made the alum wheel hub unserviceable and intended that you replace the entire hub
however there are people who have sized up replacement bearings and method to get the old race out
so technically your mech is right,, but there is a way to overhaul these if you are determined

The bearing races could be pressed in if you have access to one, or take it to a machine shop. I just used a hammer and brass punch and worked my way around the race and slowly tapped it in. No heat used. I always thought heating the hub actually makes the I.D. smaller because the metal expands in all directions ( O.D. increases-I.D. decreases ). Strictly my theory. And I bought my bearings ( race included ) and grease seal at AutoZone ( Timken ).
mazdatrix also has a little tutorial on how to cut channels and drive out the factory bearings
