Hello, the last time that I posted I had a blown 87 base model. well, now I have an 88 gxl with a fresh rebuild. The car is running perfect (went from ft. lauderdale to jacksonville with no problems), but the windows and the sunroof dont work. I sort of fixed the windows temporarily by messing around with the frigged motor, but I have no clue how to fix the sunroof or where to start because this is my first car with one. can someone please give me some input on what to trouble shoot for and how.

 

There's a small plug in the ceiling in the back center. Under that plug is a manual retract for the sunroof. Just use an allen wrench to turn it. If the sunroof moves, check your fuse. If the fuse is good, you may have a blown motor. If the sunroof is difficlut to move, or dosn't move at all; you either need to clean and grease the tracks, or your drive cables are rusted through. That's what was wrong with mine. I just pulled a new sunroof assy at the local pick-n-pull, cost me maybe $25.

 

I actually have a problem with mine and I was thinking of greasing the tracks and cleaning them. What type of grease can I use for the tracks. My sunroof goes back but I usually have to push it back and then to close again I have to do the same thing, usually more when I have to push it back to close it. The motor works but the sunroof just goes back real real slow to a poing where it stops and I have to start pushing it back myself.

 

I first cleaned my tracks with almost a can of WD40, and after that dried I used white lithium grease. Use the kind in a tub that you put on with a brush, or your finger. The spray can grease reeks forever.

 

White lithium. WD40 will clog your rails later.

 

The WD40 is just to clean it out. YOu could use carb cleaner just as well. Just use white lithium as your final lube.

 

Ok, so how the FRIG to do you the bastard of the a thing out while its stuck in position?
mine wont go up even turning it manually....

 

Mine was stuck. POS. Even with the crank it got to a point and then didn't move any more.

I was taking apart the whole car anyway, so I just unbolted the whole assembly- you need to take the roof liner off to do this.

Not to thread jack but im having a problem with my sunroof too. WHat happens is that one side goes when you use the buttom but the other sid wont so you will see the pass side life about 2 inches but the pass stays shut. At that point I stopped as not to break it. Has anyone ever seen this problem>???

 

That's exactly the problem I had with mine. The sunroof is pulled by steel cables with threads on them. Mine rusted and froze up, then eventually fell apart. You might want to remove the whole assy and check it out. I removed the cables and operated mine by pushing it for a while. I reciently replaced it with one from a junkyard. Works fine, but don't forget to lube the whole thing with white lithium before installing it.

how do you get to the cables? the side of my sunroof that won't retract is completely stuck. i can't move it at all, and i don't want to force anything. thanks
