fresh rebuild problems. ignition? tps? plugs?
problems
note : fresh rebuild.
note: ran decent i thought first time it was started. tps not adj even close to right.
note : car never idled by itself i didnt expect it to b/c of it being fresh.
we tested and adj the tps using led light method. started car. it sounded deep and wouldnt rev past 2k it would jump b/w 1500 and 2000 sounding like it was misfiring . we didnt check before we adj the tps if the coils were firring. the timing light showed the trailing plugs werent firring.
we readjusted the tps b/c it was a tad out. started car. sounded the same. it could now rev past 2000 now. timming light still showed that the trailing plugs werent firring. but when my dad pulled the cap off the coil it was shooting sparks to the plug wire suggesting it was firring.
ideas, opinions, anyone?
Thanks
Shane

First of all congrats on the rebuild just did one my self. I had that idle problem once car wouldnt rev past 2k then I looked under the hood to find my TPS was unplugged lol. If you can get access to a digital volt meter use that instead to adjust the TPS unplug the TPS and attach the negative to the green and the positive to the red and adjust to 1.00 ohm.
I assume you know what you are doing since you rebuilt the engine but I am going to just post this link to help you out it has access to FSM and is very helpful when trying to get the timing and idle down for your car if you need it. https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-faq-fc-494667/ Check out throttle body adjustment to.
If you can post a vid people can diagnose your problem alot better and you may get more replies.

How old are your plug wires? Did you use new ones or reused the old wires?
-Its LONG SHOT if both trailing plugs were not firing but try changing your plug wires and clean up the plugs since they are probably getting fouled up quickly. Fuel isnt the issue since it is running although poorly, the burn cycle isnt complete. Unless the TPS is still not adjusted right.
I would normally pull the plug with a new plug wire installed on it and visually check for spark while cranking and the fuel cut. Ive never tried it with a rotary but Im sure it wouldnt hurt.
That would be my first step in diagnosis, if it doesnt fix it move on to the next idea...
Good luck,
Keep us posted!

IF the tach needle moves normally...........the trail coils are working. Trust us on that one. Its a given.
Non turbo or turbo will drive without a TPS being connected to the harness. A known fact. A corrutp TPS connected to the harness CAN possibly cause the engine to not rev right. Cause fuel cut. Hard to explain right now.
Trail sparkplug wires on the wrong spark plugs......causes problem similar to yours.
Dad proved the trail plugs/coils were firing. Wires on the right sparkplugs? Matters when talking about trail plug wires. Lead can go to either lower sparkplug. Matters not since they fire at the same time. Normal.
