Fresh rebuild, have to clutch start it. help.

I'm actually posting this for my brother while he is in the garage looking pretty puzzled. He just rebuilt his 88 vert n/a. However it wont start by itself. I have to pull him with my jeep so he can clutch start it, even then he has to have the throttle cable pulled tighter to keep the idle around 1400 or it will die, being problem number two, it wont idle either.
When it runs, it runs really smooth, except 5th gear has no power. Checked for vacuum leaks all over with carb cleaner, nothing. Changed out the BAC valve. Changed out the TPS, timing is dead on, checked the injectors, they work fine. The only thing we haven't replaced is the crank angle sensor and the whole damn throttle body itself. Not sure what hell is wrong with it. Any ideas ?

How Fresh is this rebuild? Did you re use springs and seals? How many Miles are on this engine?

A year back my friend and I did what we called a "Bucket Build" Basically we measured out to spec every piece that was re usable from other engines and put them in the engine, it took us about a month just to get the engine to turn on its own and we had to pull spark plugs and pour in a bit of oil to get the compression up enough

Any ways what im trying to say is drive the car! put some miles on her and see if it helps, at about 600 miles we managed to start getting the car to fire up on its own

Holy hell. Yeah we basically did what you guys did. We bought a full Atkins rebuild kit and gaskets, however much to my disappointment he insisted on reusing a lot of parts that get wear and tear. Another odd thing is his damn coolant gets instant pressure, not like a compression leak, but almost immediately. It just stretches the top hose but doesn't do anything. It stays extremely cool too. It seems the more he drives it the less pressure it keeps on the coolant system.
