Fourth times the charm!!

Ok. So when I start my car, it usually doesn't start until after I turn the key 3-4 times. Could anyone help me figure this one out? I'd like the car to start the first time I turn the key?

how long do you let it crank after turning the key each time? What kinda sound is it making? Is it catching at all or just spinning the rotors around? Is this always, or just after it's been sitting a while?

I had this problem starting hot after ghetto rigging my water temperature sensor with some tin foil because the contacts weren't connecting between the plug and sensor. Basically the ECU thought the engine was cold and so was using the cold start air/fuel mixture. If this is your exact problem unplug the sensor, it's on the back of the water pump housing. Your ECU will switch to hot start fuel mixture which just gives a shitty cold idle.

If it doesnt do anything and just clicks, its the starter. Mine does that too, and takes about 3 or 4 times before it catches and turns it over

When you turn the car off- in neutral, rev it to about 3k rpm, then turn the key off, the engine will slow down on its own till its fully off- the next time you start it up, it will be fine.. This will most likly help, but if not, give more information. Note that this should help out if the car starts normally, but then shuts off after a few seconds.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I let the car crank for intervals of about 5-7 seconds. I never exceed 10 seconds. The motor is cranking but it just sounds like it doesn't want to start? Then it catches...sometimes. My car is possessed!! Lol.

Is it not catching or firing at all for those first 3 attempts of 5-7 seconds?

No. It does not cath after the 1st or 2nd attempt. It usually catches at 3rd or 4th.

I'm not saying you should go out and try it, but do you press the gas when you start it?
And what year and is it N/A or turbo?

Yeah. I've tried the gas and clutch, to de-flood, if that's what you're talking about? And its an 87 turbo.

Is there another way to de-flood the engine other than with the pedals? I was reading something about spraying oil, but I don't get it all?

Pop the hood, and find the little fuse box on the driver side strut tower. There will be one called EGI. Pull it, crank the car for a few seconds then put it back in. Now just start it normally

^^^what he said. This sprays oil into the chambers to build better compression. It helps (in my car anyway) to always let the car warm up before shutting it off.

like one guy said, before you turn your car off the next time, rev to 3k and turn it off, it burns all the gas out of the chambers so you dont get lightly flooded the next time your start it, i had one too many friends ask why i revved to 3k then turned off my car.., this was always what i had to do on my rebuilt turbo II...always or it flooded

Is there a more permanent fix? I'd really like to know. In my part of the town, my neighbors aren't to tolerant of cars in general. I can't even park on the side walk at night without a neighborhood complaint, let alone rev to 3k. =/ I know. Sucks. Haha.

Permanant fix to flooding? And if you're thinking a rebuild, the motor has 1500 on it.

only permanent fix is to not drive a rotary. but for a near permanent fix is to get new injectors that dont leak. mine has to be deflooded everytime i crank it, its becoming a bit more than the annoyance it started out as.
