Found this Turbo,any advice?

Hey guys,i went to look at a S4 GXL that is abandoned.while i looked at the car,i saw this turbo just laying there.i asked the property manager if i could keep it.Now,im currently gathering parts for my s4 turbovert project, and now my question is,can i run this turbo with the proper mods? can i attach a s5 hotside to this? can i make this a "hybrid"? and also i was told i would need an external wastegate,is this true.

*NOTE-*theres no marking on the turbo, except for the "Airesearch" ans some other lettering, but no a/r or trim code or nothing to specify what it was on.

heres the pics..............

heres the airesearch lettering along with some other lettering

backside-

dont much about turbos,i hope someone can help me out, thanks

looks like a divided T4 flange T04B with a 1.06 hotside. probably capable of about 350 wheel horsepower. you will need an aftermarket exhaust manifold and external wastegate.

that is just my guess from the looks of it. obviously it will probably need to be rebuilt, the shaft is probably rusted to all hell from the water where oil should be..

that exhaust flange is new to me though, i'm not sure how you fit a downpipe to that sort of flange.

Garrett, they stamped a number of old stock mount(production car) turbos with "Airesearch"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_AiResearch

it's really not a diamond in the rough, T04Bs are quite common and you can get one fully rebuilt and ready to go for about $250 if you look around, costs about that much to rebuild one at least.

probably not, a little beadblasting and it will look like new, so long as there isn't any large cracking.

I was thinking that the exit was some sort of v-band to the down pipe & I would say a T4 mani.

V-band is a clamp used to mount things together (Exh piping & IC piping) makes removal easy. Tial offers full V band turbine housings.

The exhaust flange is a press fit, common on some old diesel stuff. It's a bear to work with, so weld on a v-band and be done with it.

However, the turbo might be complete junk. Looking at it, there is a LOT of rust. Does it even spin?

As said above, looks about the right size, but looks like garbage.

Also, you have lots more reading to do before you can even hope to possibly attempt a turbo conversion. You have no idea what a wastegate is. This is a problem.

^agreed... do some research on turbos in general, compressor/hotside/flange types/wastegate(internal/external)/dumppipe/downpipe/ and # markings to identify what ur working with let alone thinking about putting it on your car. not trying to bash but it will help you in the long run and should be general knowledge

actually, it spins pretty good, minimal play.

The Shaolin-im stacking up on some knowledge,as i gather parts for my swap.i dont much about turbos but thats what im going to start looking into alot more.

i was thinking about sending the turbo to get sandblasted or some sort.there doesnt seem to be any cracks on it at all.

thanks guys

I didn't even think of press fit, good catch.

That turbo is going to take a ton of refurbishing and rebuilding to even be usable, possibly even exceeding the cost of a new turbo. Just keep that in mind.
