well like it says in the title,,i found oil in the intercooler,,quite a bit actually,,and just a little in the housing itself and just about as much in the piping,,but the most was found on the inlet side of the cooler,,,does this mean my turbo is throwing oil. it does smoke real good when you get it wound up,,but it idles pretty clean(no smoke) so from those with experience with this,, is it time for a new turbo. and if anyone has a good one laying around with no shaft play let me know.

Yeah, so three posts and you already post **** that makes no sense.

As for the oil in the intercooler, minimal amounts are Okay.

 

As mentioned above, small amounts are OK. No oil seals are perfect, especially 15yo ones! A lot of that oil has probably built up over years. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s on its last legs either. The turbo on my last car had oil in the turbo outlet pipes when I bought it, and it took four more years of abuse to kill the turbo!

 

Another thing is when you drive the car hard (especially turning), oil tends to sneak up the hose that vents the "crankcase" air back into the intake. This oil can make a mess in there.

 

hmm so it could possibly be the crank case vent causing all the oil,,,,here is the thing,,this is a restoration project that has NEVER been on the road,,with a engine that someone said was good when i got it,,( i have my doubts) now it idles ok,,little rough and stumbles sometimes,,but when you rev it up here comes the smoke,,now before i put it back together i checked to see if i had oil and all that in the pipes and cooler,,,now after about say 20 minutes of running and smoking i have a bunch of oil in the cooler,,,something tells me the turbo shouldn't throw that much oil,,but if say i ham burning it in the engine would the vent tube be shoolting the oil into the intercooler.

 

If you can see liquid oil in there it is too much.If it is just oil film which builds up over time that is normal.

 

well it is liquid,,now i just have to figure out wheather it is the turbo or something else,,,,it does have some shaft play,,and from what i have heard, any is to much,,so maybe this is why my last engine smoked too

 

If you have that much oil in the pipe that quickly then that turbo is bad. You can get a rebuild kit for around $125.00. Just rebuild it yourself and save lot's of money.
