FMIC Kit, I want everyones opinion!

There really arent any bolt on kits for fc's except a few big brand names that charge out of the *** for them. Ive been considering putting together a complete FMIC bolt on kit for less than 400$US. It would use a brand new core (not requiring any cutting of the bumper, but its a large core), all new piping and include all necessary parts to install (couplings, mounts, bolts, nuts). The pipe would be 3 inches in diameter (beaded ends to prevent a coupling from blowing off under high boost) and whatever color you want (within reason).

How many people would be willing to make a purchase on a kit like that? Unless you want to ghetto rig a fmic, there isnt any good selection under 800$.

I want to know how many people would really be interested in this. To make a kit as inexpensive as this, I would need more than 2 or 3 of these kits to be purchased after I am finished. If there is actually people who would be willing to buy these things, I could get started on building the kit and lay down a more accurate price.

Thanks for spending the time to read this.

I would, depending on how long it takes you, what happens if you fail at this attempt, and what your core looks like so I can photoshop it in and get some idea's

To make the kit (if enough people are willing to order once Im done) shouldnt take that long really. My car is ready to go for the project.

I'm sure that once people can view its quality and design, that you'll get interest.

Especially if its a drop in design...

If I didn't already have a FMIC I'd be interested

Definitely would be interested at that price as long as pressure tested and good quality and such...

I have been playing with water to air, for around $700 including everything, just so I don't have to have a FMIC, but if you can do a air to air kit with decent flow for $500, I bet you would sell a ton of them.

I am definitely interested, may take me a couple weeks of saving but I want one! lol. I personally still have my battery and power steering in their factory locations. If you can fab up a kit that fits a basic engine set up for that price, of good quality and looks, I'm SURE you will have interest in it.

Yes. Im having them tig welded to make them smaller however (you cant even fit a OEM sized one on a 7). But trust me, these things *do* flow All intercoolers will be pressure tested to ensure no leaks before shipping.

The only problem I can see (might be an issue) is the radiator. If needed, Im going to include new mounts and rad hoses to move it back slightly.

That core looks very thin. Pressure drop could be a problem (especially with the stock turbo).

The core isnt that thin. Yes pressure drop is always going to be a risk w/ a fmic, but I am down sizing the core for more than just fitment issues.

From the pics, it only appars an inch or so thick...Maybe just the angles?

hmmMMMM

the price seems reasonable, maybe this is a better idea than my ghetto-water-to-air

lag might be an issue, though.. but if I do a compressor upgrade, and these fit with NO cutting, then yeah, you can count me in.

Its 2in thick. But I agree it does look thin in the pictures.

I dont want to cut my 7 either, and I definately dont want to spend 1000+ $US (thats like... so much money cdn) which is what brought this idea around

Edit: If you do a compressor upgrade? I thought you wanted like 400rwhp

I have an Intercooler from a 2003 Dodge Diesel 2500 Ram, I have just finished getting it cut and mig welded and will be pressure testing it, this core is 2.5 inches thick and is as large as it can be to fit under the stock front bumber with stock rad and new rad fittings and rad hoses. the battery can stay right where it is stock all thaugh i removed mine. This setup will cool and flows extremely well. however if you are running a stock exhaust and turbo then you will experience some pressure drop however if you have an upgraded compressor on your stock turbo with free flowing exhaust + intake this would be good and with calculations being roughly good for about 500hp. this is with my brothers (engineer) help. I just finished the costs and the kit would be $680.00 CDN this includes the core endtanks with beeded inlet/outlet, the new rad mounts, hoses, and intercooler piping (mandrel bent) to stock locations and all couplers required. however i have yet to decide whether it is worth my time to make these kits i posted a thread and recieved as little intrest as possible, i would post pics however i have yet to get my film developed.

yeah, that should really be when I do a compressor upgrade but it'll more likely be a full turbo upgrade.. I want 20ish PSI eventually

and yeah, thats exactly whats turned me off.. $1000 USD is like $29084370928374092837402937 CDN...

If you can do a decent job for $400 I think people will be beating down your door. What are you going to do about the throttle body? The stock piece is unacceptable. Whatever kit you come up with needs to have a straight shot from the pipe to the throttle plates, like the Greddy one.

Im going to get a flange for the throttle body and weld a pipe onto it, pointing towards the nose of the car.

Taken from blue tii's setup, I will do something extremely similar to this piece:

jreynish has the exact setup I am trying to make available for everyone else. Not everyone wants or has the time to go out and put a kit together. Basically, I will be selling these to cover cost of materials, and a very small profit (need to cover gas n such to drive around picking up parts). With this kit I may include the option to have a ported throttle body sent (for extra cost + core exchange)

I say go for it, the option of an affordable fmic has to fly. I'd easily invest $400 into it or any price more reasonable than a grand!!! Good luck with the project if you do it.

Ill work on it when I get my motor back in my car (should be next weekish? im lazy ). Shouldnt take too long to finish the kit after that.

What would everyone prefer, two small cores welded together (such as 2 stockers) or a large core (such as the powerstroke)? I am sure I could get 2 stockers and weld them together for about 80$. That would be even more significantly cheaper than the powerstroke. Unfortunately, its one or the other right now

Throttle body

If you include a new throttle body elbow then $400 would be a great price, sign me up, I'd pay as much as $500 for a good set up like that.

Just do your research, get at least one kit put together, and make sure it's worth your time and effort. If it is great, post some pics, and tell me where to send the money.

the stock IC is decently designed, just too small and in the wrong place, right? then yeah, 2 of 'em welded together would be great! I'd even send you my mint stocker if you wanted the lower the price, and higher the performance, the better!

i have accually dabbled in that idea i had welded the two together in series and there was no pressure drop, I made a setup with a heater and a compressor with a presure guage on either sides and a temperature sensor on either sides, as well as a fan simulating the car moving forcing air through the intercooler. and the results were:

initial temp =69 degrees Celcius
initial pressure = 25psi
final temp = 55d degrees Celcius
final pressure = 23.5psi

I did the same on my dodge disel intercooler

Initial temp = 71 degrees Celcius
Initial pressure = 22spi
final temp = 51degrees Celcius
Final pressure = 19.25 psi

I am not certain on the specs of the powerstroke however i have seen them and they are quite a bit thinner than the one i have however that doesn't mean very much.
