fixing my 5 and 6th ports...my way...?

Ok my 5th and 6th ports were not opening at any rpm...so what i did was pulled off the wiring from the sileniod and the 2 vac hoses. I plugged the hose that was adjecent to the air filter on the sileniod to where the other tube off the sileniod (was perpendicular the the airfilter and main tube) was plugged in. Now everything is working fine (actuators are opening around 3800)...And i have one less sileniod to worry about...

my question is...is this going to screw anything else in my engine up...I have seen no problems as of yet anywhere...should i be wary of anything?

Sry to stray a little from topic, king of a noob question but.., what are exactly are the ports(1-6), what do they do, and how do they affect performance?

The ports are where air enters the engine.

1-4 are always in use.
5-6 open at higher rpm's to allow more airflow.

The reason that 5&6 stay closed until higher RPM's is to preserve air velocity for better low end torque.

so are you using air from the smog pump or not? What exactly did you do?

He didnt say S4 or S5 but by saying wiring harness I would guess S5 seeing how they are opened by 2 noids. They dont have to worry about not running a cat.

Yes you do .

It opens with the airpump and a selinoid.

I tried that when I was diagnosing why my 6 ports weren't working, but it opened for me at just over idle (1500?). If it really is opening at 3800 I don't really see a problem with it, other than it could possibly be incosistent. With mine the problem was that the ECU wasn't triggering the solenoid any more, so I wired in a Summit Racing adjustable RPM switch, and they work fine now. Many people run with the ports wired open with no problems other than a reduction in drivability and power at low rpm's.

Again I say S5s DO NOT need the Airpump. THe AUX orts on a S% are electronically controled.

not sure if mine were open or closed....i assume open cause i had no low end...ran rich...and the actuator rods stayed down...but i promise you they are consistently running open by 4k rpms...generally start to open at 3.8k

The aux ports on the S5 are electronically controlled, but the mechanical force used to open them comes from the airpump. The airpump supplies pressurised air (~3psi) to a solenoid, the ECU tells the solenoid to open, allowing air to go to the aux port actuators, and then the air pressure pushes on a diaphragm which moves the actuator rod to open the ports.

The S5 most definetely needs the airpump for the aux ports and the VDI to funtion.

If you don't beleive me, then go and look at the port actuators yourself. There's no electrical connections anywhere on there, there's just the air hose. You can also consult the Haynes manual or the factory service manual.

I've seen someone who did a fully electrical system, but that was a one off custom built thing, and I've only seen the one person do it. There's also others who've taken off the stock airpump and fitted an electrical pump to open the ports, but again, those are custom jobs, but that's still airpump activated ports.

Every single stock S5 and most (>99%) of the modified ones use the airpump to open the ports. That's a fact, no matter how many times you post otherwise.

You cn do away with the air pump and just have a RPM switch.

How do you wire the 5&6 port actuators open, is there really much power diff in high end, and hew can you tell when they open or dont?

Thanks
