Fixed a crappy idle I think + a question
ok it is either fixed by what I did or it is a conincedent.
I have an 86 n/a 5spd and after installing my road race exhaust I noticed it had a low loopy crappy idle.. it would never stall but it was never right.. I figured I did something wrong and left a vac line off... that was NOT the problem...
well yesterday I received my mass air adapter and cone filter so I removed the entire box system put that on and made sure the mass was level.
I then went and removed the Cruise control unit form the firewall and plugged that vac line.
I then removed the cols assist overflow bottle and plugged the hose that went to the intake... I started the car, it idled great. took it for a spin and when I came back it still idled 100% better almost perfect I would say...
maybe the cold assist was not working properly and feeding coolant all the time or something I have no idea all I know is that it is running ALOT better and the engine bay looks a lot cleaner... I am very happy...
Now to my questions.
while doing the cone filter swap I pulled my intake hose to look at my t/b and with the car off the upper two outter butterflies were completly open and all the other 3 (rear upper two and the bottom one) were all closed...
now when I would pull the accelerator cable the rear 3 opened up but the top two stayed open... then I noticed that the top two were connected to a little solenoid or something on the front of the t/b
how does this work? do those close when the car is on due to vacuum or what?

Uh. lSorry, but no it does not work like that on a non turbo series four car.
The Double throttle diaphram is what is holding the plates open. It is spring loaded to full open on a non turbo car.
IF the engine water is cold, the double throttle diaphram pulls those two plates closed til the water gets warm, then the double throttle springs them open because the source of vacuum to the double throttle diaphram is cut off once the water is warmed up.
It's explained in the FSM. Look for double throttle diaphram etc. Fuel section.
There is NO advantage to removing that set of throttle plates on a non turbo car because they are OPEN anytime the water is fully warmed up.
If yours stay open all the time, even when the engine is cold, most likely the double throttle diapharam is busted. Suck on the nipple on the diaphram and the lever should retraact. If it does not and will not hold a vacuum, then it's busted.
In other words it *fails safe* to full open.
Even if you did have a turbo, and you don't, all you have to do on them is get a 6mm socket and remvove a small nut that holds a spring and lever on the throttle body and remove the lever and spring. Then saffety wire the outer plates full open. Takes about fifteen minutes counting removal of the intercooler.

ok so in the long run is there any gain to removing the outter two plates on my n/a pros and cons?
cause in theroy I could just remove the outter plates and leave the rod in there for now that will be better then having them in there if they are not working properly I would think
thx guys this will be a big help
