To be fire safe?
Yes, I carry one, but your best defense is your nose.
If you smell fuel - you have a leak. Find it & fix it.
Denial will not help.
One of the worst sounds is the "thump" of fuel vapor catching a spark..

There was a good thread in the race car tech section about this. Seems as though those little extinguishers are next to worthless in the event of an engine fire. Most think that getting out of the area is your best bet in that case unless you have a full sized unit. Check out the thread:

Watching you car burn to the ground is better than facial plastic surgery and skin graphs for the next 10 years!

I carry a 10 lb dry chemical on the floor behind the passenger seat. It's mostly for if a person is in danger.
(Yea - I know dry chemical is corrosive as hell, but it will knock down an engine fire.)
For my car - I keep the insurance paid up..

Apparently the halon is still available and will be for many years to come. The substance was banned but all of the already produced supply is allowed to be sold off. And word has it that there is a huge stock pile of already produced halon fire extinguishers.
I think they are still available out of state, but I havn't seen any in CA for a couple of years, so I was assuming that CA banned them before the Feds did (since CA passed a bunch of Greenhouse gas restrictions a couple years back when Bush wouldn't sign the Kyoto CO2 agreement).
Pull off the upper intake manifold, if you have a fuel leak chances are its at the injectors. You will see it puddling (or maybe CSS fluid, remove that junk). I dont bother carrying a fire extinguisher. One you would use on a gasoline fire wont help with electrical, and visa versa. So whats the point.

best proposed setup
I would like to set up a fire extinguisher system that can be deployed electronically directly into the engine compartment (kind of like Nitrous, only straight into your engine bay).
Kind of like air-bags, but puts out detected fires!

thats what commerical aircrafts have on there engines. Becareful. Very dangerous system: They are tiggered with an electrical charge. A squib breaks a seal and once the system releases the Halon or whatever...everything is coated. LOL if tigger by accident your car engine is gone. Or everything has to be cleaned and hoses might have to be replaced.
Man one way to be fire safe is don't let the o-ring on the injectors get smushed up, yike that happened to me and I drove my car to UTSA 10 miles with fuel spewing out the side of one of my secondary injectors I thought the fumes where just left over from the install, but as I was getting ready to go back home to change (AFROTC GMC training at 0630) I started my car and poped the hood just to be safe, I saw a steady stream coming out of the front secondary
called AAAand they wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole untill I called the fire department to come and see if was safe, even though it would only leak if the car was running......and to think that it was dripping on my turbo!!!! THank God I didn't have a heavy foot this morning or my car would prolly be toast (literaly) though I remeber watching somthing that Gasoline is very hard to ignite by just heat, you need alot of it to do so, but a spark or a flame will combust it definatly......Remeber seeing a Bill Nie episode where he droped a lit Cigeratte in a bucket of gas and the cig went out not cumbustion, but when he droped a match, the it instantly ignited, the fact that it was 38 degrees this moring prolly help too!
