Fire issue after rebuild

As most of you know, I have been seeking a great deal of advice, and today is no exception:

Here's the deal:

I rebuilt my engine, and put it back in. It is getting fire, fuel, air and compression, I suspect the timing is off. It sound like it's trying to fire through the intake and I am getting puffs of smoke through the intake like the timing is off.

Here are my questions:

1. I was told that it is basically impossible to put the rotor in wrong, is this a correct statement? (That is other than literally having it in with the gear teeth toward the center of the engine)

2. What exactly is the timing and how do I set everything correctly? Please refrain from stating anything about a 'yellow' mark on the pulley, as mine does not have one.

3. The gear that drives the spark advance, the one on the eccentric shaft, can it go in bacwards and cause this issue?

4. On the intake, there are 2 canister looking items hooked onto the ports, what do they do, and what would happen if they switched places? Could this have happened causing my issue?

I rebuilt it and took the following steps:

all items properly sealed, inspected and tightened to spec. New plugs, plug wires are good, I have inspected spark. All hoses and wires were marked, all markings followed and hooked back in their original locations. before trying to start, turned over engine until oil pressure was seen on gauge, no fuel or spark given to engine at that time. Hooked everythig back up, and went to town. I have various obvious settings on the timing, but no luck.

I can hear it trying to start, again, getting fire though intake. No leaks, either.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

-Scott

FSM. Timing relates to when the spark plugs fire in relation to rotor position.

On the LIM? If it's an N/A, those would be the 5/6th port actuators.

the yellow mark i believe is corrosponding to the top notch on the pulley. should be two notches.one to the left and one to the right. some people say top and some say bottom.

Yes, I believe it is the LIM, they are on the intake just above the exhaust header, and are like little vacuum drums.

I recognize the 2 notches, but no yellow mark, is themark suppsed to be in between them? Like in the middle?

FSM 4A-60. Is that what you're referring to?

Setting timing is covered in the FSM on 5-34 and 5-35.

Also, some random info is round on 5-6 of the Training Manual.

Yes, that is what I'm referring to. What might happen if these were switched? Anything?

Also, can a rotor go on the wrong way?

I found the 2 knotches on my pulley, now where in reference to those should my timing mark be? in the middle? on the left on? on the right one?

I am having the same problem. Does the timing have to be dead on ***** accurate? Or will close let the engine start and then the timing adjusted once the engine is running. What else could be causing this?

I believe they can spin both ways when they are new. Once they are old, I think it's bettter to have them spin the way they used to. I don't think this is your problem, anyhow.
