Angry Finally Did my automatic to manual Conversion at T&R Racing

Well i just came back from T&R racing. They did my transmission swap for $600. I checked there transmission mounts they made its nice, everything is fine. They even installed my SS brake lines and bled my brake lines.

Now my problem isnt the work T&R Racing did its the ******* Transmission from the 89GTU.

First of all the transmission is a 88, even though the cars a 89.

When the car is idling theres a knocking noise. It sounds like when lets say a flywheel is spinning and a small circular rod is rubbing alongside the teeth. Thats the noise it makes.

IN first gear it makes the noise mad loud. The same rod rubbing along the teeth sound. And you can kind of feel it in the shift **** itself, like something is loose and dangling inside and it rubbing on something causing the noise.

Tony said its the transmission itself.

Once you shift into second its fine, the noise goes away and the car rides good all the way thru 5th gear.

I only stalled it once when i tried to take off in second gear, the RPMS have to be around 2.5k RPM to take off.

The other problem is that when its in second i think the car should be around 30mph , or i would guess. But at 2omph it sounds like its whinning like its time to shift, when i hit third i can go up to like 60mph and then it begins whinning to be shifted.

So now should i just get a new transmission case (gearbox) or have this one rebuild?

Rob got any transmission for sale...

Jason, NYC

EDIT: THe heat inside the car coming from the transmission is cooking me alive in the car. Is this a sign of a bad transmission

One would think you'd check the condition of the tranny before paying to have it swapped in.

sounds like the tranny needs to come out to be rebuilt, at the very least it needs to be pulled to double check that everything was installed properly and to check the input shaft bearings, throwout and pilot bearings. i sure as hell hope they remembered to put the pilot bearing in since the auto did not use one...

I've heard of dads owning rx7's but never any moms.

does the noise go away when you hit the clutch? I still suggest checking the fluids. I forgot to put oil once, and the tranny was whining like crazy. So before you can cause much more damage to the tranny, check out the fluids. Remove the plug to check out the fluid level.

Find yourself a known working trans and swap it out...no rocket science here. These sorts of noises and problems are not uncommon with NA trannies, especially s4's. I've got one in my junk pile out back that could be heard from 50+ feet away at idle, sounded like it had rocks inside. The car still drove with it, though, but it would have died pretty soon.

You should be able to take 2nd gear up to 60-65ish, not 20.

On my NA days, I had bad luck with used NA trannies, once I broke the original one, the second and third tranny went out within a year of their installation date. Now to be fair, I was using a unecessary solid bronze clutch, hence the reason of the issues.

On any case, I ended up buying a rebuilded one from Rob @ Pineapple racing, never had an issue with it.
