Finally, a bulbar for the Rx7!

It doesn't take much of a survey to see how many Rx's get broken noses, which includes mine twice. I've been pondering a solution since my "other" car has a near indestructible ARB bullbar winch bumper up front yielding scarey ultimate protection. And the uber-low RX front end, while aerodynamically sweet, keeps taking it on the chin from "other" drivers making the car less practical as a DD (yes I know...too classic to be a DD anyway).

Then I come across this inspiring picture which makes me think that "something" just might be possible. Perhaps something like a tube "face guard" somewhat resembling a football helmet facemask. Not an outrageous bullbar, just a wraparound tube structure kinda blending in with the nosecone trim.
This doesn't look so bad to me.

I was planning to make my own after buying a MIG welder. (I know its not TIG, but I'm not that skilled nor does it need to be pretty) But, how hard can it be? Lolol

The issue with putting a structure like that on the front of the vehicle is that it is still mounted to some part of the frame. When you hit something with it, you can and will deform what the 'protective' bar is mounted to. This is something I've been trying to get people with these ill conceived ideas that its protecting their vehicle in accidents from damage. Those forces still need somewhere to go.

Edit: I do admit, a 'rally bar' is something I have been contemplating building. Its really just for some good driving lights.

Just do this. You'll destroy the car instead of just the bumper if you hit anything though.

loll That CRX looks funny with some roobars in the front. If you want to design it correctly, you'll need to add in places where it's supposed to compress and be weak in front of the frame so it bends wildy in front and not in the frame part.

I think the only thing that would survive is the bar itself..lol!
The car would be bent all to Rat ****!

Has a mean look to it though..something like Mad Max goes to Japan!

Let's see then...needs to be the right length, right tensile strength, flexibility, and maybe pre-curved. Side mounts at the front corners and maybe a laterally mounted leaf spring in the front. Flexy not rigid maybe? There's a lot of leafs out there(actually got a few in my garage).

Hmmm...

Your concept only protects against cars of similar stature and they aren't the biggest problem.
The average brotruck/SUV would override the bar and make first contact about halfway up the hood.

Oh, you mean like the tailpipe that gouged into my hood when an SUV driver tried to park in front of me. Yes, you're right on that one.

Nope, there might be some satisfaction in it if it was ever my fault. Three times walked up to parked RX to find "gifts". Parking in the city is hazardous to RX's.

Parking in DC is hazardous to any car...assuming you find a legal space to begin with.
I lived/worked around Dupont Circle and it was terrible to own a car.
