THE FINAL WORD: Tail Lights Differences--S4 & S5--Vert & Coupe
ONCE AND FOR ALL:
It has come to my attention that there are a lot of misinformed people out there when it comes to second gen. tail lights. I think it is high time we set the record straight for all. Weather it is a newbee or a veteran RX'er, we need to get correct info from those who know! I encourage everyone to write in on this subject. Together we can finally bring one of those grey areas into the light!
Other then the obvious physical caracteristics, there dosent seem to be any hard proof to what lights can go where.
-I'll start by stating that regardless of year or style of light, a coupe light will fit a coupe and a convertible light will fit a convertible. All coupe lights are interchangable, as are verts. Frome there it gets blurry.
Some say that coupe lights will fit on a convertible, while others disagree.
Also, what about liscence plate panels? Some say that s4 and s5 panels are interchangable. Once again, others disagree.
Write in with past experiences, customizations, and straight out misconceptions.
Lets find out what works.

s5 tailights WILL work on an s4 car but you have to cut out a small portion of the sheetmetal or beat it back with a hammer (waht i did) and they fit great. the liscense plate panels are the same regardless of s4 and s5. vert tailights will fit coups but the vert tailights are shorter. so youll have a gap on either side of the liscense plate unless you have the vert licsense plate center section. every tailight made for the second gen will fit all second gens... you might have to do a "cutting" or "beating" but they will work.

You are both wrong.
This thread is pointless just more misinformation and no need for it.
All FC lights are interchangeable there was 2 styles. S4 and S5 there is no JDM light.
If you put S4 lights on a S5 you will have a small gap in the license place bracket so use a S4 one if you want.
If you put S5 lights on the S4 you will need to beat the light socket back some and cut a sliver of the license plate bracket off or replace it with one from a S5.
Wow that wasn’t so hard was it?

Convertible lights are different because the the center pieces are different. A coupe key hole is above the tail lights so the center piece is not as wide as a convertible. The convertible key hole is to the right of the license plate so therefore its wider. So what does that tell you? The lights on the convertible are shorter than the lights on the coupe...so you can't mix and match parts. I've personally fit coupe lights on a convertible...but you'll have no key hole... the taillights are physically different...but all the studs match every chassis. S5 lights from a convertible fit a S4 convertible alot easier than s5 coupes but you'll still have to open the cuts some how. (I used pliers) The S5 convertible tails will fit a S4 coupe but you'll have a keyhole....? But why do that when there are more S5 coupe lights than vert lights?

i'm pretty sure the Japan market lights have a different sized license plate surround/holder. i had to modify mine to get it to fit for some reason.
also European market lights (maybe just S5) had a rear "fog" light in place of one of the reverse lights...basically just a reverse light that is on all the time. interestingly enough though the other reverse light was a red lens.

Furthermore, European lights are the same width as the convertibles, with a different centrepiece to allow for the wider european style license plate.

This IS the point of this thread. There is a lot of misinformed people, and it is the responsibility of those who know, to do the informing.

This has all been common knowlege since the first S5s were released in late '88. It's covered in the FAQ, about a million writeups and has been covered here many times.
