i soaked mine down with degreaser foam, then used a few cans of carb cleaner to rinse the loosened gunk off. took off the easy parts and repainted what i could reach.

I'm a little late to join in on the picture party I guess, but I spent three hours yesterday with degreaser and paper towels, literally grabbing handfuls of grime off the subframe and frame rails - underneath it all, I had almost NO paint on my driver's frame rail, but you couldn't tell.

Previously, I apparently had this great idea that I should paint the engine bay with the Textured Rustoleum stuff - and it wasn't terrible, but it does look an awful lot like you messed up regular paint. It's a pain to get off, too - I've been using a razor-blade scraper, and a wirewheel on the end of a drill. Make sure you hit it with a sealing/etching primer after you get the paint off.
