A few questions; yes in a NOOB:P

Ok I was looking at a couple of things on ebay that r supposed 2 increase hp, etc. One was called a vortex generator that goes in the air intake and is supposed to spiral the air to increase gas mileage and hp. Then another thing was called a voltage stabilizer that connects to the battery and is supposed to make the car start faster as well as a few other things. I was wondering if anyone has owned any of these and can give me an opinion as to whether they r worth the money or not.

And one last question. Everytime I start to go past 85-90 mph in my 86 n/a auto trans rx7, I start hearing this fairly loud "DUUUHHHHH" kinda sound. I haven't got the tranny flushed out yet so I'm hoping thats what it is. I hope its not the engine. I'm wanting to eventually race my friends nissan 240, but I dont wanna ruin anything so I'm wondering whats causing that sound.

Vortex intake mods do nothing except cost $20. (Maybe this should go in the FAQ?) The Voltage Stabilizer is probably crap. A good battery is all you need.

Get a full tune-up first. And race on a strip.

The FAQ has info on tune-ups and is a good starting point for mods

hmm, ok I won't buy them. How much would swapping to a manual cost? :P Well what kind of mods specifically do you recommend? I'm fairly new to cars, but I know the basics so I'm not completely dumb. But when someone says to make a mod to the exhaust or the air intake; what r they talking about? I know what the intake is, I bought a chip that went into the cold air intake sensor that was supposed to add more hp but I really didnt notice a difference. Where can I buy these parts at? And any ideas on that sound I keep getting at 85-90 mph?

Popular mechanics did a test on the Votex/Tornado intake devices and found on average a 5% power loss on vehicles using them, and about a 3% fuel consumption increase.

Please take that "chip" out. It is a .5 resistor you can buy at Radioshack. They do nothing. Browse through the forums and search around and you will find tons of info.
