Question a few Q's

Hey i just bought a 87 N/A about a week ago and i new to cars but im learning as fast as i can. The car didnt have a belt around the air pump. I think my cat is already dead, if it is do i need another one? i dont need to get it checked for emmisions cuz its over 10 yrs old. If i take the air pump out do i need to block any holes?

If i want to remove my A/C how can i tell if the system is discharged? (i turn it on and no cold air comes out) once its discharged i can take everything thats atached to the system out or do i need to keep anything?

whats the black cylinder in the upper left and corner? what does it do and do i need it?

Thanks guys
Jon

If you have no cats or don't care about them then no you don't need the airpump for that function. However most n/a guys use the airpump to actuate the 5th and 6th ports, lots of info can be found on that topic if you do a search on the subject. As for the a/c I'm not too sure about that but I have a feeling that there will be some fluid in there even if the a/c doesnt seem to work anymore. I think the black cylinder your talking about is the carcoal canister, it just stops the car from being stinky, I think it filters vented air from crank case and the fuel tank.

Cheers
