fd rz oil coolers into fc

hey guys

im currently installing twin fd rz oil coolers into my fc
a few questions i have though:

first of all, is this inlet/outlet a thermostat? (see attachement)

from my understanding of these coolers, the thermostat is open when cool to bypass the oil until operating temperature, then it closes which forces oil through the cooler.. right? (similar on both coolers)

so therefore, the thermostat inlet/oulet should always be "inlet"?
otherwise, if the thermostat is oulet, by time it travels through the cooler it would think its not operating and keep opening/closing?

would i have to upgrade my oil pump (or "regulator" as i have read else where)
or would there be sufficient pressure?

cheers guys!

I don't know why'd you do this unless your stock one is leaking/not working.

Stock FC oil cooler is efficient and has less pressure loses compared to the FD setup due to all the piping etc.

I'd only go dual if my oil temps where high or if it was a road racer or something.

And you are correct that the thermostat should be the inlet.

thanks fleemer
ive actually fabricated up a vmount setup so stock cooler didnt work
hence why i have now gotten dual fd coolers

it does sound alot more sensible the thermostat being the inlets

No the thermostat is the outlet. You want the oil to be a constant temp. If the oil went to the thermostat first it would closed as soon as the oil temp reached its closing temp, no regulation of the temp. On the other hand when the oil exits the thermostat if the oil is too cold it will open and let some hot oil to by pass the cooler and mix with the cold oil keeping the oil at a constant temp. This is the way the factory set it up.

On a side note, I used RX-8 oil coolers. I was going to use FD coolers from a 94 but the RX-8 were bigger. Can you give the measurement of your coolers?

ahh ok.
it make sense both ways to me :|
can anyone give another opinion.. at the moment i have my thermostat as outlet

i will dimension the coolers for you, they are both 10 row oil coolers (10 and 9 from stock fds i believe. the rz had bigger oil coolers)

My RX-8 coolers have 11 rows of fins with overall dimensions of 10.25 wide, 7.25 high and 2 thick. I bought them from a local place that parts out RX-7 and 8s. He told me these were the largest coolers found on an RX-8. I don't remember what year they came from.

What front end are you going to use, stock or after market? I am using the Corksport Front Bumper; well I am going to use it as soon I get it to fit. I ran my coolers in parallel with 7” inch fans. I got the idea about the fans from the RX-8 forum. There is an outfit on there that makes a kit to install fans on the RX-8s.
