Exclamation FD Flywheel on S4 Keg

Hey Guys!...

It was brought to my attention that having an FD flywheel on an S4 keg counter balances the rotors, or something to that effect....

i was told that the FD flywheel is counter-balanced for the FD rotors and S5 rotors....

i was driving in gears near redline and didnt notice that my shifter does vibrate a fair bit, to even make my hand knumb but i thought nothing of this before....

my car has an S4 keg with S5 externals, it's an S5 car....

I'm kinda worried as to the effects it could have on my car, i hope nothing bad or was this whole thing even a myth?...

i was told a rotary is supposed to idle and revv silky smooth, mine really isnt that bad from what i can notice, i never thought anymore of the vibration until now....

the motor and flywheel, basically the works were installed by a certified mazda mechanic, so i would assume he wouldnt neglect something as such....

what do you guys think?...

-Tony

Front counterweight needs to match to the flywheel

actually all of these have to match per series: front counterweight to rotors to flywheel

yes series 5 and series 6 rotating assemblies are the same balance so you can use an FD flywheel on a S5 block but if you use an S5/S6 flywheel on an S4 engine it will be out of balance. yes it is rather serious, stationary gear bearing wear will result if you continue to run the engine near redline, fix it asap.

do i need to fix the counter weights on the front of the motor or swap the flywheel?...

i have a weird chirping/ticking noise comming from the front end when i get on boost and try to run a decent ammount of boost....

it's been like this for almost 2years, could i have caused the ticking or leaded towards it?...

it depends how the motor was built, you said it is a S4 keg so i am going to assume it has all S4 internals meaning you need an S4 flywheel or counterweight for a lightweight flywheel. if it is an S4 keg with S5 front counterweight and flywheel then you need to put both the front counterweight and correct flywheel on it.

great, sounds like i'm fucked, period....

and would this be causing the ticking i hear everytime i try and boost my car?...

basically it happens in the higher gears, and more frequently when i go uphill....

when i press the throttle more the half way....

Get rid of the FD flywheel.
You're hammering your bearings, and that's going to take another rebuild to replace them.

the car's already been driven almost 2years this way....

it's gone on road trips and everything....

now i get ticking from the motor somewhere when i try to boost, or give it gas to make it go....

are there any specific symptoms of the stationary gears "shitting" out?...

Probably like, ticking in higher RPM's, or like at 1/2 throttle... j/k LOL

try and get a sound clip of the noise and try to isolate where its coming from. if you can hear it while the car is in neutral but jamming on the throttle then try removing the drive belts and try again this will isolate all the accessories and limit it to just the engine and turbo.

a clogged cat/exhaust leak can cause a whirring noise but i have never heard a rotary tick so i would guess it's either an accessory or possibly the turbo is failing.

if it was detonation i doubt it would have lasted this long.

i have a video clip for you guys to hear....

http://members.shaw.ca/matrix9eleven/Badrun1.divx

it has happened numerous times, supposedly comes from the turbo side of my motor, and is ******* annoying....

it's not detonation....

and it only happens when i put a fair bit of load on the motor....

the double click noise?

i dunno but it doesn't sound like the motor, it sounds like a solenoid clicking but i don't know of any solenoids that are that loud on these cars...

Its probably got the front counter weight on there otherwise you would have noticed it eating a fair bit of oil and probably some noise/smoking from the clutch because of the oil.

If its gone this long let er ride, you're half way to a rebuild anyways - haha (j/k)

I'd defientely get a hold of the builder and see what is in there for a front counterweight - nothing can really be done until yo know what you've got in there.

Classic has a point. But regardless you might want to take it easy till you get something done.

yeah the loud ticking noise....

i have no idea what it is, it comes from the turbo-side of the engine bay....

the guy who installed the motor said it was a complete S4 keg including the flywheel, counterweights, everything....

he used S5 everything else, he had told me that the only FD part that was installed was a clutch, because it was a bolt on and thats all they had....

i dont notice it going through oil or anything, just vibrates, he poked my engine from the wheel well on the passangers side ( my drivers ) and the motor shifted a little, he said it's a good bet that my mount is broken, on account that the previous owner had jumped a curb or 3....

that makes no sense since the FD uses a pull type clutch, not a push type found in all FCs, unless the transmission was replaced then there is no way you have an FD clutch in there.
