Question FD alt hitting Intercooler on S4

ok i have had my car torn apart for about 4 months and things did get a little mixed up but now im trying to put it all back togather

all i have left is to put on the inter cooler but the FD alt is hitting the intercooler really bad.

the alt is down as far as i can get it ( im using the stock sized belts) most people use a belt that is .5 to a whole inch longer than stock and dont have problems so what is gong wrong?

the only part that is hitting is the top the the power connection and its gonna come down about another half an inch. i can use a shorter belt cause i would be able to get it on. hell to get this belt on i had to really work at it.

would i be missing a spacer of some sort that lifts up the inter cooler? can some one go look at thier stock set up for me and tell me how the inter cooler is bolted down..

on mine i have just two bolts going through the "bushings" on the IC on the passengers side with those spacers/bushings actaully resting on the UIM is that right or should there be another spacer in thier?

on the passenger side i just have the two brackets bolted to gather the one in the intercooler straight to the on the with the buschings that is attached the the actuall motor is that right?

im baffeled....

P.S. im using the stock FD hook ups could i remove the "L" bracket for the power off the alt and just bolt the power wire to where the L bracket went?

please help this is all thats keeping me from bringing the car out...

If you still have the stock alt. use the plastic piece from it and use it on your fd alt. If you don't then just turn the fd plastic mount down a little. For the intercooler I had to use washers I think 3 or 4 per intercooler mount bolt to clear the alt without any rubbing issues.

You have to remove the plastic piece to move it up or down.

When I had the stock TMIC I used some washers and the hood cleared fine.

When I got my FD alternator from silverrottor the plastic piece was broken and bent so I used the stock S4 plastic piece and it fit fine.

Just get a FMIC if you still have clearing issues!

You can barely see it in my pic but you can see the S4 alt. post next to the FD alt. plug.

The red wire going to the alt.

hey guys, I had a similiar problem with the Lshaft (posetive output from alt) gouging into the DC on my 90 GTU N/a. I unbolted the top Lshaft bolt/mount and swung it down 2-3 inches to clear the DC chamger. Tightened it back down and have no clearance issues anymore.

S4 plastic piece for the alt is interchangable with the FD if you grind a tiny plastic nub out of it. Its there to prevent movement of the piece on the stock S4 alt, its that part that prevents it from being a straight mount over between the two alts.

my next question was about unbolting it and swinging it like kenith did but i wasnt sure if it was making a power connection at the top of the alt and the bottom but i guess he answered that

thanks for the help guys and it looks like this is a semi common problem that most ppl just solve on there own

yeah, although it looks like a common problem, it also seems to be intermittent. Some cars have issues, others from same models seem not too. Odd, but at least its an easy fix.
