FC3S Rear Brake Caliper Swaps

Hi All,

With rear brake calipers basically becoming non-existent for FC's (there are no remans available. All websites that say they have them end up cancelling the order), I was thinking it would useful to compile a list of rear brake calipers that can be easily swapped into the FC. If anyone has any historical or current information, it would be fantastic to have a stick or guide with a list of what can be done and what fits. Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute yet but maybe we can brainstorm based on similar caliper design/sizing and go from there?

it is kind of weird that the design changed so much nothing else works.
so the GSL-SE and FD all have the same brake pads.

the other car that uses the same size brake pads is the 2003-2005 Mazda 6, so maybe that is a place to look?

Looking at the rear calipers, the bottom mounting bracket for the Mazda 6 is much narrower than the FC. There are also some other differences that may not be too big of an issue.

i was also sort of pondering about taking a complete brake system from some other car, like a Tesla Model 3 or something
or like, i think its a 2010ish mustang, the lower ball joint is the same, so you could swap the whole mustang strut with the Brembo brake in the front, and maybe you just use the rear rotor, caliper master and booster too?

At minimum a custom caliper bracket and some arrangement for the cable will have to be made. There are quite a few choices for calipers with integrated parking brakes for 10mm thick rotors.

More difficult to find is calipers for vented rear rotors that are 20mm thick. Most cars that have rear rotors that thick have the separate parking brake shoe system.

Might be able to use a Wilwood caliper like this, it's made for thicker .81"/20.5mm rotors. Techno Toy Tuning just released a rear brake kit for GSL-SE trim FBs that uses similar Wilwood calipers but also their rotor.

At one time I had thought about trying to see if the Rx-8 rear caliper would work if a custom bracket were made to mount it. Unfortunately, it looks like the Rx-8 rotors are 18mm thick. I guess if one is making a custom bracket they could make it so Rx-8 rotors could be used. It is larger in diameter so I don't know how that would affect the brake balance between the front and rear.

Does anyone know of a good way or an available system to cross reference rotor thickness/diameter and the associated model applications? That could be a start in creating a list of calipers that will accept our rotor size. At that point, we can look start the painstaking process of comparing caliper designs. I have no doubt the list will be long.

Not necessarily a good way but at the moment I just go to RockAuto and look up the car model in question in this case the 2nd gen Rx-7 and the Rx-8 and look at the rear rotor. They list the thickness and diameter.

we used to use https://web.tecalliance.net/opticat/qa/home/ap
you used be able to pick a part type, and a brand, and then sometimes a size. but then they switched to the Techdoc style, and it sucks donkey *****, info is in there, but getting it out is not as easy
