Bad news:
These cars are old, and anything that somebody is willing to sell is going to have major problems. When new, these cars sold for the equivalent of $27,000 to $39,000 in today's dollars, so that should give you an indication of how far removed a $3,000 to $4,000 version is going to be from new condition.

Good news:
You can buy a running TurboII for about $2,000, and then fix and upgrade various problem areas as they arise. You can have a lot of fun with these sports cars as long as you realize that the car will not be reliable. Insurance will not be as high as a new car that requires full coverage, and the 86-91 RX-7 performed very well in crash tests when compared to other cars of its era.
