And one of my friends at school has over 350,000 miles on his 1500 that his dad used to do cross country driving with, its on its original motor, but the tranny is the 4th one the truck has seen.

If you'll reread my post you will see that I said "I have never heard of it NOT making it past 200K"

My dad had a mazda b2000 pickup with 255000 actual miles on the chassis. It had the engine replaced, and the tranny replaced in it's lifetime and finally he sold it because it split in half due to rust... The person who bought it from him had the chassis repaired and drove it for some time... that thing just wouldn't die lol... I kinda miss that truck...

Not if you drive it like this every day:

i would like to see a factory honda get revved to 7+ rpm daily for years on end

like alot of people had said, my NA was alot more reliable then my TII has been. but my TII has still been pretty reliable for me, besides the 4 day period it didnt want to start(tried maby different procedures to get it started just didnt want to start), then it started and has ran fine ever sence.).. but if you are wanted to go for reliablitie go for an NA.

Never had a problem with a turbo RX7 except seeing the gas needle drop as the boost needle rose to 12 psi.

NA will outlast any piston engined car,

-make sure you check fluids every time you fill up( brakes, clutch, engine, radiator,PS, blinker) and regularly check tranny and diff fluid.
-replace parts as they break ( remember this is an old car and old plastic and hoses become brittle especially due to the heat the rotary produces)
-regular oil changes ( I do mine at 4000 miles)and adding oil every 1200- 1500 miles depending on how hard you drive
-making sure your radiator and cooling system is always in good shape and always topped off

if you regularly check these things and make sure everything is well taken care of then you shouldn't worry.

If you're lazy, forgetful or just a ricer from the old honda scene then stay away.

this applies to both Turbo and NA.....my friends think i'm crazy for DDing a turbo but it's been good to me and I've been good to her.

By far the most reliable 7 has been my S5 NA and it sees a good 800 miles a month and a good 600 of those are below 6Krpms

I'm waiting on a clutch to arrive as we speak then some nice bushings to make the shifter and tranny feel silky smooth again.

drive it like you stole it but take care of it as if you're quasimodo with a deaf, blind, mute bombshell.

the rest of you horrible victims of "i dunno what to say so I'll regurgitate some bullshit no one can ever prove:"

In the racing world, Mazda has had substantial success with two-rotor, three-rotor, and four-rotor cars, and private racers have also had considerable success with stock and modified Mazda Wankel-engined cars.

Mazda's competition debut was on October 20, 1968 when two Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S coupes entered the 84 hour Marathon de la Route ultraendurance race at Nürburgring, one finishing in fourth place and the other breaking an axle after 81 hours. The next year, Mazda raced Mazda Familia R100 M10A coupes. After winning the Singapore Grand Prix in April 1969 and coming in fifth and sixth in the Spa 24 Hours (beaten only by Porsche 911s), on October 19, 1969, Mazda again entered the 84 hour Nürburgring race with four Familias; only one of which finished, winning fifth place.

In 1976, Ray Walle, owner of Z&W Mazda, drove a Cosmo (Mazda RX-5) from the dealership in Princeton, New Jersey, to Daytona, won the Touring Class Under 2.5 Liters at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and drove the car back to New Jersey. The Cosmo placed 18th overall in a field of 72. The only modifications were racing brake pads, exhaust, and safety equipment. [2]

After substantial success by the Mazda RX-2 and Mazda RX-3, the Mazda RX-7 has won more IMSA races in its class than any other model of automobile, with its one hundredth victory on September 2, 1990. Following that, the RX-7 won its class in the IMSA 24 hours of Daytona race ten years in a row, starting in 1982. The RX7 won the IMSA Grand Touring Under Two Liter (GTU) championship each year from 1980 through 1987, inclusive.

In 1991, a four-rotor Mazda 787B (2622 cc actual, rated by FIA formula at 4708 cc) won the 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race outright, the only non-piston engine ever to win at Le Mans, as well as the only team from outside Western Europe or the United States. This led to a ban on rotary engines in the Le Mans race starting in 1992, which was eventually rescinded. After the race, the winning engine was publicly dismantled for internal examination, which demonstrated that despite 24 hours of extremely hard use it had accumulated very little wear.

This followed a decade of class wins from other Mazda prototypes, including the 757 and 767. The Sigma MC74 powered by a Mazda 12A engine was the first engine and team from outside Western Europe or the United States to finish the entire 24 hours of the Le Mans race, in 1974. Mazda is also the most reliable finisher at LeMans (with the exception of Honda, who have entered only three cars in only one year), with 67% of entries finishing. Mazda will return to prototype racing in 2005 with the introduction of the Courage C65 LMP2 car at the American Le Mans race at Road Atlanta. This prototype racer uses the Renesis Wankel from the RX-8.

Mazdas have also enjoyed substantial success in World Land Speed competition, SCCA competition, drag racing, pro rally competition (the Familia appeared in the WRC several times during the late '80s and early '90s), the One Lap of America race, and other venues. Wankel engines are barred from international Formula One racing, as well as from United States midget racing, after Gene Angelillo won the North East Midget Racing Association championship in 1985 with a car powered by a 13B engine, and again in 1986 in a car powered by a 12A engine.

Formula Mazda Racing features open wheel race cars with Mazda engines, adaptable to both oval tracks and road courses, on several levels of competition. Since 1991, the professionally organized Star Mazda Series has been the most popular format for sponsors, spectators, and upward bound drivers. The engines are all built by one engine builder, certified to produce the prescribed power, and sealed to discourage tampering. They are in a relatively mild state of racing tune, so that they are extremely reliable and can go years between motor rebuilds
there is a new book being published that talks about how the automobile industry almost changed to the revolutionary rotary engine. This book will have details on the C111 concept from daimler-benz( hit 200 mph in the 70's) and the corvete 4 rotor prototypes.

you all should pick up a copy when it finally comes out.

I will say the 7 isn't the most reliable car I've ever had. Ever since new it would have starting problems. Once one was corrected another one would pop up. Finding a good honest rotary mechanic down here is even harder. So I do most of the work myself. The most annoying thing is the fact that it'll be running perfectly one day but the next morning it gives you the finger. I think my car is just bad luck. I've even though of getting a project car and taking the best parts from both to build a better FC.

The worst thing that happened was about two weeks ago, the car was great and running strong again after replacing the AFM. The next morning it doesn't want to start. My driver's side door handle is broken and I havn't had it replaced since it's so difficult to find someone in the for sale section who will sell you unbroken parts even when you ask them if it works beforehand. After I start troubleshooting it what happens? ... You guessed it, the passenger's side door handle breaks and now the only way I can get into the car is to leave the window open or go through the hatch. I was ready to throw the bastard off a cliff. It's the one time I've actually thought about listening to my parent's advice and selling the bitch.

But seriously, if you can deal with the occasional quirks and have time to work on the car then get one. They're very fun when working right, just remember to bring a Shaman along when you go and inspect the car. Evil spirits must be inhabiting my car. After all, our atomic bomb did kill about 200 Mazda employees. Stupid Karma...

if you want one, you'll take the responsibility to take care of it. therefore, it can be reliable as any car out there.

It really just depends, and can be completely random. One thing is true though, keep up on scheduled maintenance and don't beat the **** out of it every time you drive and it'll run a long time.
We're talking gasoline engines, not diesels...

I own my TII almost 10 years , only replaced starter, master, slave cylinder, and water hoses.
that's all , rx7 is very reliable if you keep the car well.
I think to blow an rotary is more difficult than blow a head gasket

I agree mechanically the cars are very solid. I've never had anything mechanically wrong other than having to replace the clutch system, front diff mount, and tranny (that one wasn't the car's fault). It's the out of the blue electrical failure that kills me.

They're awesome dailys dude. Only thing thats annoying is when you try to mod it and you settle for factory parts when something breaks because they're easier to get. If you have a garage or a place to work on it though they're great. Oil changes is all you really need to keep up with. Of course like driving any old car make sure your starter/battery/alternator are all in good shape. Other than that I drive the **** out of my car everyday and haven't had to do anything but regular maintanence.

Daily driving them for 4 years now.
My experience.
88 SE NA 130k Lasted me 30k before a coolant seal
88 GTU NA 80 lasted me 20k before coolant seal.

88 GTU with rebuilt TII motor. Lasted me 55k before a possible side seal. Internals seem to usable.
88 GTU with current rebuilt TII motor. Going 15k so far since June at 12psi daily.

It's all about how the car was maintained and driven.
I made sure all my parts were new or rebuilt. I am the only driver so I know how the engine has been from the start.

I am also a believeer that Premixing is the path to salvation
