I'm no car audio expert, i know just enough and i'm enough of a cheapskate to get myself into trouble. I want to replace the stereo system but there are amps for each individual speaker, one of which is blown and another is getting there. I'll be using a deck with a built in 200 watt amp, will that fry the speaker amps? Or should i go looking for another set of rear speaker amps?
You would have to wire around them. Run new wires to the back strut tower speakers. Remove the old speakers and amps and install some decent 6.5" aftermarket speakers in there.
Even some cheap $40 pair speakers will sound worlds better than 17-12 y/o stock speakers.

yeah you have to wire around em.. i pulled each speaker and attached new wire to the + and - on the speaker, then through a new hole in the bottom of the casing i ran that wire out and soldered it to the appropriate 2 wire connecter that went back to the headunit.
I just pulled out my stock amps and speakers. Threw some 6x9 speaker boxes in the back of the hatch, so the shock tower is essentially now empty, with only the two speaker covers on there.
Up front, there's one amp, removed that, now I just have to run wires from the head unit to the speakers up there.
But yeah, ditch them. Unneeded weight.

Wire around them??? just yank the amps out and use the existing wires that are there.. thats what i did and it works fine... you dont need to run wire all the way to the back speakers

I wasen't clear on a rewiring, sorry. It is not needed to rewire the rear speakers. For other speakers it is much easier to rewire than use the existing wire because the amps for the door and under dash speakers on some models are not located where the speakers are. I personally like to use all new wires when upgrading on a old car.

that is what i did.you have four input wires before the amp 2 for power and ground and two for input. this is in the rear only. the colors behind the radio are the input speaker wires at the amps in the rear. now the front is different but useing the same terms as the rear. the front has one amp on the passenger side for the both front speakers us the same idea as the rear and you get away without running any wires. good luck and good speed.
oh yeah i highly recommend building some panels for the rear strut towers and putting some very good 6.5" speakers in them. you could make the panels out of 1/4" mdf. they will would sound awsome
