Cool FC hood shock ... take 1

FC hood shock take 1 ...

will most likely interfere w/ power steering, and perhaps a/c equipped cars ... you could try going over the exhaust side, but I thought exhaust/turbo heat might be a bit much for it. I mounted the brackets as shown, the firewall side using a 10mm bolt thats there already ... the hood side uses a small hole where the plastic rivet for the factory heat shielding goes, you can drill some more (carefully). I used the brackets that it had, only drilling an extra hole on the hood support for a second 10mm w/ a spacer. This shock was from a late 80's to early 90's Maxima. Fully extended, it props up the hood another 2-3 inches.

Interesting...Can we get some better pictures of the shock and mounting? The picture above is very poor.

meh. Seems a little annoying. Did you try smaller ones mounted closer to the sides by the firewall? PM me pics of your Turbo GTUs

Aaron > agreed it blows just had cell phone camera yesterday ... will get some better pics.

Phoenix > The FC doesn't have a whole lot of room in the rear corners, or I am just unlucky in finding shocks that are short enough ...

maybe. You probably used the best that was available. I haven't even looked at shocks so I just assumed SOMEONE made smaller ones but I don't know. Does the hood come up by itself now?

Phoenix > You have to raise it by hand, but it will "stay" from all the way open to about 6" down from fully extended, more than that it starts to close, albeit slowly(this is with an aluminum hood). Also I forgot to mention minor relocation of brake line from above that little ledge to just below it, and bracket fits between brake booster and clutch hardline.

bracket pics by request:

They are from a Maxima, not sure on the exact year but late 80's "boxy" one. On the Maxima it is mounted on the passenger side, and there is only one.

I entertained the thought of both sides as well, but one holds the hood up, and if mounted on the passenger side it would sit right over the turbo when closed(might not be an issue, but I didn't want to find out the hard way).

A lot of cars use small shocks but that raises an issue. If you use smaller shocks their length at full extend will not be near enough to barely lift the long FC hood. It may hold a gap when you pop the hood but it won't open on it's own and will doubtfully hold if you pull it open. I've done this before using shocks pulled from a bimmer hood and it didn't work worth a damn.

You need to use longer shocks but still have a spot to tuck them away when closed. If you're trying to do this to a steel hood, forget it.

trucks use spring type props. they are a lot more sturdy compared to the maxima struts (ive had 2 of those maximas, i know,,,). the early 90s f150-f250 uses some good ones. plus the springs dont go bad like struts.

You know that the factory left off things like hood shocks too save weight.

I guess if you wanted a Supra
